You don't like EVs? Guess what. We don't care. This is a thread to talk about the touring reveal.

I for one I love it and would get one over the sedan any day.
I care if he doesn’t like EV. They suck. Zero soul.

Lithium is 100% recyclable but it isn’t an inexpensive process. Until extracting lithium becomes more expensive than recycling, I don’t see it taking off. Sodium ion batteries are being researched as well. You just need to use an element with a single cation. Sodium is just not as efficient as lithium. I’m sure people will start screaming about using up the earth’s table salt supply when it happens.

I have felt that magnets should propel vehicles since the age of 12. I’m glad that it finally happened. It’s a dream come true for me. Burning fuel is just inefficient.

Each battery cell is contained in a cylinder or pouch, depending on the engine design, within the battery. The ion moves because of a positive to negative charge. Many EVs use a permanent magnet in the motor, which are made from rare earth metals like Cobalt but those manufacturers are moving to iron as it is more abundant. Most of those old photos of Cobalt mining in the Congo was for laptop computers, just as a point of reference. The rotor spins which creates a magnetic field. That is an asynchronous induction motor.

BMW uses a wound rotor rather than a permanent magnet. They use brushes that transmit electricity via a commutator on the rotor. So, no permanent magnet in the rotor, and that is the component made of rare earth metals. BMW is more ‘earth friendly’. Plus the engine is more efficient as there is no loss from having a permanent magnet when coasting.

There are many more differences in EV engines and designs. It is more of a combination of chemistry and physics vs mechanical force. Thinking they are all the same, is like thinking all petrol engines are an iron block with a carburetor and 4 cylinders.
So you’re saying the M in BMW is still well earned. Just a different type of motor. I’m cool with that even if I still prefer their B58.

The engine in the M5 Touring (G99) will certainly be fun to drive.
That could then be around 585 hp as far as the V8 engine is concerned. In total there is a system output of around 750 hp and 1,000 Nm.

Available in US though? I wouldn’t mind this instead of M5 if there is a M60 variant

Garage List
2024 i5 M60  [9.50]
Not to be a hater because it did sound remarkable even when it was behind me but, I walked away from an M5 comp on my way to work this morning. Unknown year but relatively new looking. Obviously had no mods to the engine which is a thing you can not do with an electric vehicle. 2 things I will miss from ICE are the sound and the ability to modify.

An i5M with 1000 hp, for example?
A G90 M5 (not G99!) may come to the US.
