Clearly u have not driven the new Ferrari 488 GTB. I went looking for it, but couldn't find any lag. It's country miles ahead of my M5 in Sport plus throttle setting. If Ferrari could make a turbo perform as sharply, BMW can as well if they have the will.

While the sound of my 650GC may not be what the Jag has, I think it is one of the best sounding exhaust notes in any car I've ever had (hint, delicious)- including the 2011 X6 50i. Of note, that sound (in the V8 X6), was so good it was used for a sound track in video games (yea, not saying much, but still better than nothing).

and I love the comments about KGB_123_99 being a troll (especially from people that have less than 50 posts). For the record, it appears he has over 400 posts - you guys may want to look at that count before calling him a troll.

PS - Just to clarify, a top fuel dragster uses a Turbo or a Supercharger?

Those Jag sound engineers can do sound like an Amsterdam hooker can...(fill in blank).

Not true, you can tune the sound of the engine with exhaust, not change it. BMW's exhaust manifold arrangement is what is responsible for the current N63/S63 soundtrack, you can only tune the sound from there, not change it to sound like any other V8

Hmm I thought the F type R was less than 3650lbs but perhaps I was wrong ... On further reading it would appear it is heavier and based on an old platform. Still a great car though from what I've been told, shame BMW doesn't have anything like it with their carbon tech

I totally agree with you that it is shameful for BMW to be employing their fancy tech to build X5s and 7 series instead of a cool roadster.

I totally agree with you that it is shameful for BMW to be employing their fancy tech to build X5s and 7 series instead of a cool roadster.
Those of us with the F15 appreciate that expertise. More of them running around for both DD & pleasure, too. You'll be surprised by what's in the pipeline.

Sorry to say, BMW doesn't engineer V8's well. They'd be better going with AMG.

I just found out from that video posted on the front page recently just how bad my S65 V8 was engineered - rod bearings prone to catastrophic failure at 50K mi, throttle body actuators made with PLASTIC gears that can fail at 40K mi, using 10W-60 oil @_@

Maybe they should go with LS blocks instead

Apparently there is a reason why we have been getting away from BMW M designed engines to BMW AG based engines for the M cars... Too many issues and to much variation in engine power from engine to engine has been claimed by people with connections as one of the reasons the S65 was the last "pure" M engine...

Not entirely correct since the N63 and S63 doesn't have the same exhaust manifold design.

N63 have a traditional setup where each bank feeds one turbo each.

S63 has a cross bank setup where each turbo is fed with exhaust from two cylinders on each bank, combined in the collector the turbo mounts on.

This makes a N63 engined car sound like a normal/regular V8 with the typical V8 burble (just go to YouTube and listen to a 550i with a Meisterschaft or other exhaust). The S63 with the cross bank exhaust looses the V8 burble but gains a even pulsation of exhaust to each turbo, thereby reducing lag and improving performance.

That doesn't make sense. You don't need the 98mm bore center for a 4L V8. They will almost certainly move to the 91mm bore center of the modular inline family. Any more is just dead weight. Lighter engines make for lighter cars and the easiest way to make an engine lighter is to shrink the block.

The supercharger was the only thing i didn't like about the Jag.

THAT EXHAUST IS INCREDIBLE!! NOW pair it with some uncorked turbo spool!! OMFG!! Thats motorsports heaven!

oh wait, just buy a '12+ 650i for sub $40k or M6.

First I was also on your way for an new BMW V8 ... based on the "Baukasten" cylinder - meens in reality 2 B48 2.0ltr.R4s put together to create an new 4.0ltr.V8.

But my source says like the normaly well informed Georg Kacher of Automobile that the new V8 would be based on / be an variant of the N/S63. Since it is clear, that the N74 - with the same cylinder layout as the N63 - will stay in the BMW Portfolio for the luxury car branch, it make also sence to base an new 4.0ltr.V8 on the N/S63 block and that could only meen to reduce the stroke to reach the 4.0 instead of reduce the bore.

For an new M5 this would be an much better / sportier engine layout than any new engine based on the B engine Family.

Listen to the new AMG GTR 577HP for the best sounding TT V8 . Same TT V8 as in the C63. If the new Jag FType sounds like this then that would be excellent!
