Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) is reported to get the famed a 4.0L Twin-Turbo engine 'derived' from the N63. It sounds like this is a new engine that will be shared along the BMW family (next M5?) and into the JLR family.

The way the car market is moving, just having a V8 in the lineup is for some reason become 'more expensive' and 'more exotic', so BMW is looking to 'share' the development costs of the engine in this way.

While having BMW sell its motors to other manufacturers is nothing new (hi McLaren F1), what is interesting here is that Aston Martin will be using the Mercedes-AMG twin turbo 4.0 V8 for its upcoming models (including the Vantage). A potential F-Type successor fit with a TT BMW V8 would give us an interesting proxy war between BMW and Mercedes-AMG, from which we will certainly benefit. Watch that space

Love the way that car looks and hopefully they keep the sound as good as it currently is. I would find it slightly funny if someone ends up getting one and badges it as a Jaguar Z6...

Great news and it is nice to see the two sharing some development costs, sort of.

Be nice if Jag gave BMW something like the platform in return...

While we're at it do McLaren fancy giving BM their carbon tub and PCC suspension systems in exchange for the wonderful V12 they had that propelled the F1 into the stratosphere.

Interesting, but the move from supercharging to turbocharging is not so hot. Everyone knows supercharging is superior when it comes to throttle response, power and exhaust note.

It's different but definetly not superior. Depends on what you want though. Superchargers have parasitic loss that a turbo does not. Happy trolling bro!

They should use the exact same engine instead

No! BMW hasn't made a V8 that sounds even remotely as nice as a Jag since 2013. Their 5.0 is perfect the way it is and sounds beastly especially in R or SVR guise.

This is the very first hint I've heard of BMW using an all new 4.0L TT V8 design for the new 550i and possibly M5. This would change a lot of things about the engine characteristics from the 4.4L engine. Especially in the sound department. On one hand I'm delighted to hear the BMW may be doing something new here, supplying them to Jaguar is a bonus for Jaguar. I just hope that if true, M will make it an exciting engine for the next M5/M6.

According to the source the engine is not "all new" but based on the N/S63 ... I guess lighter and less stroke!? This seems bettet than an all new V8 based on the "Baukasten" cylinder.

Ah, yes, of course! Now I remember! NA V10 incoming next gen on the M5 and M6 as well as a supercar M8.

We can all wish it, but I'm afraid we are longing for a routed horse.

I wish Weismann was still in the game. I read something about them getting funding before liquidating everything during their bankruptcy. Not sure what the deal is, but I would be first on the list for an s63tu powered two door 3000lb coupe with DCT. They only made it as far as the s63 from the old x5m and before that the s85. I'd much rather see those then a jag lol.

Supercharging is in no way superior to turbocharging.

A high static compression engine with a smaller turbocharger running relatively low boost is much superior in just about every way to a supercharger. Best of both worlds, better throttle response, fatter torque curve.

It used to be correct, but not nowadays.
Turbo's have really outpaced the outdated Supercharger.
Just look at the award winning engines...
