I disagree with the thought that the OP somehow deserved or should have expected this situation to unravel the way it did simply because he didn't have cash in hand during the inspection. After the inspection, the seller agreed to the sales price and agreed to meet the next day to finalize the transaction. No one forced the seller to agree to those terms. Once the seller agreed he was morally (and perhaps legally) obligated to follow through. If the seller wants to shop for better deals the next day that's fine, all he has to do is say that he won't agree to anything until he sees the money. A shady seller will obviously ignore all of that, but a seller with any character would honor the agreement he struck the day before to sell the car at the specified price.

I understand your disappointment, but such is the way of the world. If the guy wanted to be totally straight up about it, he should have said he would accept your offer, but whoever had cash in hand first is the buyer. I feel like my word is all I've got so if I tell someone $2k, it's $2k. I've had situations where people offered more money after an agreed deal and I still go through with my agreement just because it's the right thing to do. That stuff does come back around.

Sucks man. Maybe it was for the best. Just be patient and you'll find a car you like again.

That's the unfortunate transaction of selling or buying a car private party. Had the polar opposite happen to me 1 month ago. We had a big community gargae sale, 1200 homes in our gated area, anyhow my father in law had passed away about a month before and had an older MBZ with a ton of miles. I detailed it out and then tried to get the smoker smell out for about 3 weeks prior. We stick in front of the house with the sign and got a lot of responses. This couple offers 2500 for the car we accept and they say they'll be back in an hour, someone else comes up hearing the whole transaction and offers 2600 cash right now. I say no not fair I told yes etc etc. Anyhow fast forward one hour no one comes by, they left a $200 deposit, two hours comes and goes then we get a call we'll be there in 20 minutes, an hour later they show up but only 2200 plus the deposit. We sell it to them simply because we can't stand seeing her departed dad's car out front but get hosed for the difference. Selling or buying private party is always a crap shoot.

morally obligated, yes. but so are all these schmucks that claim they'll be back the next day with the money and don't show.

legally obligated, no way in hell. (unless you have a notary or other officiary standing present while the verbal agreements are made).

And regardless of morality, or how it's viewed. Not being prepared for this to happen is just naive.... I think that's what people are trying to say (myself included). Ignoring all other aspects, its simply the real world....which is why the 'kid' thing is being reiterated over and over again

If he's a young guy, that's completely appropriate though.

Dont want to rain on your parade but money talks( That's why you gotta act quick). When I was 17 I came close on buying a used E36 325I(about 10 years ago) Im glad that I didnt buy it: the repairs would have kill me. IMO go with something cheap reliable save your money and go up the latter slowly. Don't waste your time on modding etc. Drive a crap car then buy an E46 down the road.

There are many other cars out there too but I understand your frustration.

Good advice on multiple points. If you can barely afford the car, can you afford the repair/maintenance bills?

I have been on the selling end and a buyer tells me he is going to buy and does not show for an appointment the next day. I had another buyer ready too but told him someone already committed to buy. The next day I contacted the 2nd buyer and he said he just bought a car.

Lesson: It's better to take the guy who has cash first. This isn't even considering in the OP's case the guy offered much more money.

Life (read: adult) real-world lessons happen at some pretty late ages these days. I look back at my mid-twenties and think "damn, I was such a kid". And that was after four years in college and years in the Corps, to include pumps to the sandbox.

It's all relative man. Puff puff pass or whatever.

i wasted so many fucking hours hunting for a e46 M3 to end up deciding that i cant afford it because of its damn maintenece after test driving, and going checking various ones out n getting all excited! so i know how u feel as far as wasting time looking around for the car. the guy was a total duche bag. u should go remove hid kidneys at night, sell them, and go buy the car back from the other duche who got it for 3k =)

Thanks everyone for replying, i understand i was wrong that i didn't bring all the money to the inspection, but like i said it was late at night and banks were closed when i got off work. I understand him taking a better offer, but breaking your word for 200$(thay i made up) is pretty fucked up in my opinion.

To those that said "money talks"....i was giving him the full amount that he asked for & i was giving him down payment to let him know that i was a serious buyer. Bottom line, guys a douche in my book just for breaking his word not once, but twice.

As for my age, i just turned 18.

Give the kid (no pun intended) a break. I don't know him personally, but I see him post up in the SoCal every now and then. He's working at a market and save up the cash. I'm sure he's getting close to minimum wage so $2k is quite a big deal.

Like I've said before in another thread...just get a reliable car. You just need something to get from A to B. $2k is already an incredibly low budget to be working with, let alone a BMW.

My first car was priced at around $2k, it was a 1993 Honda Accord. I got it back in '03 when I was 18.

Breaking word for $200? That's roughly 10% of the initial price. He's not your friend, or family member. You're a stranger to him. Cash rules.

I don't see that as being shady at all. Being a seller and buyer on craigslist that type of stuff happens all the time. It is just business.

Than why would he agree on the price in the first place ? If he didn't feel comfortable with the 2000$ that i was giving him, shit he could have something instead of bailing out on me and i would probably agree on the 2200$ in the first place. I understand him looking at me like i am a 6'4 walking dollar sign, but i was giving him the money, i was giving him the downpayment, he didn't say anything and he bailed on me twice. I dont care what anyone says, business or not, that guys a fucking douche, if i was there i'd probably punch him in the face and say "we are fair now".

P.s I m not directing the anger towards your post

P.p.s. There will be more cars to check out, i ll update you guys about what i got.

Thanks for everyone's replys.

If you really want to get back at him, just wait a month (or more) then post his number on a fake craigslist ad. Post an iPhone 4 for a really good deal and he'll get calls all day long. He'll have to get a new number.

*I do not condone this behavior.
