Total scam to drive up the price of the car. The "other guy" was the seller's buddy trying to run game on you. Really weak stuff, you're better off not having bought that car. I bet there's more wrong with it than what the mechanic saw, too. F Craigslist.

Sorry bro, but if you were really serious about buying the car, you should have taken the cash with you. If he couldn't produce the clean title right them and there, you could have easily walked and have been done with him. You'd have also left a lot less pissed than you are right now.
The seller is wrong and a dick, but you're also in the wrong.

I wouldn't worry about the shit bro... You'll find a better car! Don't be discouraged, just keep thinking positive! Trust me, good things come to those who wait and if it was meant to be then you would've had it. Who knows, the fucking car could be already broken down somewhere leaving him stranded out in the middle of bum fuck egypt

You're still a kid, you're going to be experiencing a lot more shady stuff as time goes on.
This happened to me several years ago at a dealership. The difference was that I was about to buy a $35,000 car and I was ready to pay off the whole thing upon delivery, lol. |

This might come off condescending, but I promise to you it's not.
Let me start with the premise that the other buyer was a legitimate other buyer (which I do believe, as he started off by saying someone else was just going to buy it...not asking you to match it). But honestly you're showing your age, and your lack of experience (especially when it comes to selling). As a guy trying to sell his current car, money 10000% talks. Not a deposit, cash in hand talks. Deposits in most states are considered legally 'refundable'. So if you give me a deposit, and I hold the car for 2 weeks, losing buyers, I'm screwed.. More than likely the guy actually didn't accept the deposit, in order to make his life easier if someone did offer his actual asking price. Someone mentioned this above, and I'll iterate it. If you were serious, and were going to try to negotiate down a price, you need to have the cash on your person, right then and there. Don't negotiate if you don't have the money on you. You HAVE to realize this. You negotiated with him, but didn't have the money. Yet it seems you/your 'representative' were willing to pay OVER what he was asking. This is what it boils down to. Think about it from the seller's perspective, I guarantee you he's had at least one person already come up to him and say they'll buy it, and that they'll come back the next day and back out. Add this to the fact he would also effectively be 'losing' $200 by selling to you..... he's going to sell it to the first guy, with cash, at the asking price....period. Yes the seller was a little shady, morally grey, and a bit of a dick, but you'll see this a lot more often....and the first time that someone backs out on you on a 'guaranteed sale' after offering 10% less than someone else, you'll understand where he came from. It's business. If you really wanted to buy it, you would have brought the cash in your pocket. You could have just been saying that and change your mind at the last second while he was holding the car for you. It's a first come first serve basis. Whoever has the cash will receive the item.

Good you didn't buy it from this clasless guy. Who knows what would have been wrong with the car if you bought it given how dishonest this guy seems.

Sucks but in the same spot I probably would have done about the same. Can't believe he ended up getting 3K for it. I mean, if it was a scam the "other bidder" would have declined at the last second and he would have asket the $2,500 last bid from your buddies. That would have been a real scam, rather than just not selling you the car.
Sucks he wasted your time though.

exactly, the scam woulda been called out when your friends left. The fact that all communication ceased means that the other purchaser was more than likely legit |

That's business, not shady at all. Don't take it personal.
He sold it for quite a bit more than what was offered.
