First gun I bought and still my favorite is my Sig P229 in .357 two tone. I put the Hogue grips on it before it left the gun shop. Love it. Fits perfectly in my hand and is a pleasure to shoot!! Congrats man.

I wouldn't recommend a beginner carry anything. Get your permit then shoot A LOT to get comfortable with it and then think about carrying it.

Revolvers are even more simple and reliable. But they lack capacity. The ability to carry even one more round might make the difference that saves your life. In a high stress situation people who are not heavily trained tend to just fire until the gun's empty, and they don't even remember afterward. And speaking of training - Get some, a lot of it. Not just gun training. Self defense training, of which a lot (99% some would say) is about mindset. Having a gun for carry purposes does you absolutely no good if you don't have mindset. I know that's something I don't have enough of, myself. It takes work and practice to get there. |

Another thing is to get something you're comfortable with carrying and shooting. You really can't go wrong with pretty much any modern handgun, semi auto or revolver. Two other companies that make very awesome compact handguns are Kahr and Kel-Tec. They're pretty inexpensive, too.
And don't get too caught up in the caliber wars, people take that stuff really seriously. Use what feels right to you once you get some time at the range with different guns in different calibers. Don't write off a "small" calibers like .380 or .32 either. If you check out sites like packing.org or thehighroad.org you'll see a lot of people who carry on a daily basis have guns chambered in those calibers. |
