Interesting discussion but there isn’t a car out there that is perfect. All of the comments here are about personal preferences and wants and needs. They make different cars to address different audiences. For a family, one car rarely can address all those needs and wants. It reminds me of a time a lonnnng time ago when our family (2 kids then) car was a Chevy station wagon — and my personal car was a MGB roadster two seater.

Well said. And I’m of the regretful position of getting the IX since we already have my wife’s JGC and she refuses to switch over the family car honors. So I gave up the more fun car for more family capable that won’t be used.

So I might be making this switch. I found a 2024 that was used by the sales manager for a bit. 2500 miles.

The issue - the car was built almost a year ago. Dealer first listed it in fall of 2023. Bc it was used then in service date is back then as well.

It will be sold as a new car and qualify for rebates but it will come with essentially 1 yr less warranty than a brand new car.

Question for everyone here - the earlier model 2024s i5 m60 - should I be concerned about early model issues?

Thanks

I took delivery of one of the very 1st i5 M60 available in the USA. Besides from the near endless recalls and stop sales that plagued i5, i7, i4, iX...my early 2024 i5 M60 was perfect. No issues at all, and no bugs in my software and build quality was top notch! YMMV though!

The cars weren’t actually released until November 1st. Many of us had cars that were ordered sight unseen. I could watch camouflaged car tests and read about the car. My car has been perfect. There are occasional software glitches, but that would affect new cars as well. There weren’t model year changes other than an interior color. If it’s a good deal, go for it.

Not sure how far back you are thinking, but I ordered my i5 eDrive40 in January 2024 (shortly after I first saw them at dealerships here in November 2023), and took delivery in mid-March 2024.

Other than the current recalls and what I consider minor app quirks, the only issues I have had with my vehicle have been QC problems from the factory (which have both been fixed through the warranty).
  1. The iDrive controller knob had a sharp edge on the metal, so it was replaced.
  2. The light in the driver's side sun visor never worked, and the entire visor was replaced.

Otherwise, there have been no issues and I'm very happy with the car after almost 8 months of use and about 4,800 miles.

The only thing I remember from the forums that you may want to ask about, or check on when you're test driving the vehicle, is regarding a dripping noise that appeared to come from the front right side behind the dash. It was most pronounced when it was humid outside and the A/C was running. It was a known issue with some vehicles where the dripping from the cooling system was hitting a piece of metal and making a pinging sound which was audible when in the cabin. There is a fix for it, but it involved the dealer removing the battery to access the part under the vehicle. There is a post in these forums somewhere about it - even with a picture of the car with the battery dropped out of the bottom.

If I find the post, I'll put a link to it here.

Found it! Here is the post about the dripping noise, including photos of a forum member's car up on the lift with the battery pack dropped out.

I learned long ago that my wife has her preferences and I have mine and they don't always meet. Sounds like you have an existing SUV in the family, so you have the flexibility to get something you want. If you can make an effective change, I would do it. Did you lease it?

On a personal note I have tried, over and over, to get my head around an SUV. I have driven many. Could never do it. Neither can my wife. I have been driving for over 40 years. I drive an M550 now. Best 5 series BMW has ever made in my view and the 5 is an exceptionally nice sedan, of which there are fewer and fewer. Too bad they won't make another M550.

I am a car guy, and my wife is an SUV girl. We have NEVER been Minivan people, even when we had 2 kids and 3 dogs at home. She has owned cars, and I have owned trucks and SUV's But when I did own an Expedition, it was by necessity. I had a boat to pull and her smaller SUV (1996 Land Rover Discovery) couldn't do it. Once I got rid of the boat, so did I get rid of the Expedition. I like Sporty cars, and she likes her Land Rover/Range Rovers. So our current setup of my 540iX and her Range Rover Sport fit us perfectly. Although she still can't believe my car is longer and wider than hers, she still says it feels both too big and too small for her. I think she likes the wide open space feeling of the SUV, and the "Incorrect" feeling of safety being in a "Truck" rather than a "Vulnerable" car. Logic and crash testing means nothing to her. Plus I don't allow the dogs in my car. I have seat protector in the trunk for "Just in case" but still....

I agree with you on the m550. I had one for about 7 months. With my obsessive personality I convinced myself I wanted an SUV shortly into having that car and now looking back, the m550 was the best car I had (out of 5) in the last 3 years. I wish I had kept it but it was impossible given the issues I perceived I had with it.

At first, I thought the DHP was giving me motion sickness. It turned out to be the HUD and spacial disorientation that some people get by looking at different depths while moving - similar to reading in the car and getting sick. Once I turned it off I was fine and the DHP was quite a cool feature.

While owning the m550 - had a few back episodes with my 2 herniated discs - I through my back out 2x and getting in/out was challenging. Also, bending in and down to buckle car seats was a bit of a pain. While, an SUV is better in these cases - they are the exception not the norm. And I’ve now realized after having an x3, x5, IX - that the seating position in a sedan is much better for my lower back. I get very uncomfortable in an SUVs upright position, especially bmws firmer seats. It just puts too much lower pressure on my lower back. The m550 by far had the most comfortable seat despite appearing to share the same seat as the x5 m50 I had , it was notably softer and again the seating position made it even better.

The final straw was back then wanting to have the family car (SUV). But hey we gotta go thru some experiences to learn haha.

The i5 m60 with the luxury seats gives me a similar feeling to the m550. When I sit in the car I sit in the seat rather than on it. The cushioning is 100x better than the IX and the seating position is 1000x better. I just can’t get comfortable in the IX. I guess I’m a sedan guy after all and I just have to let my wife have the SUV.

I’d prob get a g60 540 if I could start it all over but now I just got the charger installed and my wife would kill me if I ditched the EV route all together after 2 months lol.

Love this setup you have. If my wife would take a RRS instead of the JGC then I’d be happy to have her car be the family car lol. I just hate driving the jeep, it’s horrible. But I have to stop that from influencing the car I have to drive 3 hours a day for work..
a) I’ll never have the family car
B) even I could - sacrificing my comfort on my daily commute for maybe a weekend family trip is not worth it.

Yes I did lease it.
The trade in values are ranging from 60k to 80k. It’s wild. I casted a wide net on it.
Two dealers 78/80k - this was a 105k IX. I owe 90k on it. I rolled everything into it. So being upside down 10k is actually quite amazing.

Those two dealers are also offering 12% off msrp before incentives. Bmw just added mid month extra 1k off. So if you lease it’s like 10k off the i5 m60 in rebates.

Long story short. I’m pretty close to being able to just swap out with no money down and not change my payment much.. took some effort but I’m getting there.

The one I’m probably going with is the car used for the manger with 2500 miles. I have not pushed back on price yet. I want 15-16% off on this type of car. But they are giving me a good trade in on the IX so I have to take that into account. If they do a bit better, I’ll pull the trigger.

Just do what I do when I am buying a car. This has worked for me when buying the last 6 cars (2 of them just negotiating the deal for my son) I walk in, knowing the deal I want. How much I am willing to pay, what my payments are going to be, how much i have to have for the trade etc. You have already done most of that.

Write the 2 numbers that work for you down on a piece of paper (Trade in and price you are willing to pay for the new car) and tell them this is the deal you are comfortable with. If they want to sell you that car today, make it work, and you are ready to sign right there, right now. Otherwise you are still at an impasse, and there are always other dealers that might be willing to work with you.

Sometimes it works right away, sometimes it takes a few minutes, to a couple of hours after I walk out, before they call me. And once it took 3 days. But they DID call.

The key is: They have to be able to show a profit. If you can show where the car you are trading is worth more at retail price than the wholesale price they are offering, and the new car is worth less than they are asking for, but they still make a profit, they will close the deal. The problem you are facing is the amount you are upside down in your trade. Otherwise you could sell it yourself, and they know this. But make it work for you and not against you.

I know they are selling the demo as a new car, but with 2500 miles on it it isn't really a new car. The worst thing they can do if you push a little on the price is say no, they can't do that. But if you use the amount you are upside down to feed that into the deal, it might work.

Thanks for the advice. This is basically what I did over email to as many dealers as I could. No one ever comes back and says done. They all came back with their proposals, none of which were as good of a deal as I requested.

I’m now focused on this single dealer with the demo car. I completely agree. It’s used. It’s already 1yr into its warranty based on the first in service date. I can get 12% off a new car if I use a broker any time I want. But the broker dealers are no even close on my IX. So while I think in isolation the demo car should be 16-18% off or more, I have to be cognizant of what they are also doing for me on the trade in. I’m very close and I will just throw out a number and say take it or leave. I’m going to say 15%, again they are at 12. Plus the additional 1k added incentive yesterday- this would improve the deal very close to target. Plan on doing that today actually. Will keep you posted!

I will wait with anticipation to see if you get to close the deal.

He took another 2k off to match the other persons value on the trade. So it’s 78k on the trade plus 14.3% off the car. I’m pretty happy with it given my situation. I have to wait for them to fix the I5 recall but he said if the car is marked sold then it should be pretty quick.

One last question - the car has the I5 electric decals on it. He said it was a launch car and it sits in the showroom now with decals on. It didn’t have the decals when it was being driven. Any concern with the decals leaving behind newer looking paint than the rest of the car? He said absolutely not but it just worries me that paint wasn’t exposed to the elements like the rest of it.

Those two dealers are also offering 12% off msrp before incentives. Bmw just added mid month extra 1k off. So if you lease it’s like 10k off the i5 m60 in rebates.
Whoa. That is something. 12% discount on an M60?....Do you think they discount the 550e or the 540 like that?

I know you’ve had all of the EVs under the sun! How would you compare the i5 m60 drive to the IX? Specifically the body roll and bounciness? My ix has air and rear steer but I still find it a bit unsettled / lacks confidence - mostly due to its weight I think.

The i5 m60 is still a heavy beast. I’m always too all over the place on Test drives to really get a good idea on these things. I fear it may not be much better?
