IMHO, this is simply a fallacy to make folks feel like the 911 is the more practical car to rationalize the decision. Who likes to put stuff in/out of cramped back seats? No one is happily sitting back there either. People don't like to get into the back of a 4 series :P

Cayman has more storage space with a frunk and a trunk. The hatch allows things to be put in (I can put my golf bag in there easily, not happening in a 911)

I have been a 2 car guy since I was 25, going the route of my two cars cost less then your one new car. People tend to get bored, but I like to keep good cars. The contrast of them is what I enjoy. I have always had a second sports car, even driving it in the winter (Miata, now a 370/cayman).

I also enjoy working on cars so if I feel like putting one up on jack stands and not finishing a brake job right now, I have something else to drive.

If you lack parking, this is a problem and I get it but if you have the space and as Ferris said the means, I highly recommend it.

I think some folks are falling into the trap of of thinking that you either have to have one great car or two cars that suck.

At the budget OP is contemplating (has to be $100k-ish if he can buy a AMG GT), there are plenty of great cars that are cheap enough to fit two of within that budget.

Like I said, it seems like the problem is that he hates the 240i. Ok, get rid of that first. Now comes the tough part:

Would you rather have a 911 or, say a M2+GT350? Tough choice!!

The 911 is a waaay more practical car. Those 2 seats may mean nothing to you but to those of us who have small children it makes the 911 a potential daily driver even (not for me personally as I prefer classic 3-box coupe design).

I disagree completely on the golf clubs comment.

Drop the rear seats on even an early - narrower - air cooled 911 and there is space for 2 sets of clubs in the back and 2 people up front.
I also used the dropped rear seats to carry my guitar cases in our 996 C4S - which no way would've gotten into a Cayman and certainly not in a Boxster. So there *are* uses for the back seats. That's not to say I'd use those "reasons" of "practicality" to justify a 911 over a Cayman. They're both great and both different - hence Porsche offering both models

Yours Aye
