Is owning two more affordable cars better than owning one more expensive one?

I moved from a 2016 Cayman S to a 2018 m240i xdrive to allow for a family vehicle that my GF could also drive and was more practical.

I am not feeling the passione for the m240i...it's a fun little car, but I don't look back at it and don't lust for the next drive

I lead a pretty simple life and cars are really only one of my only passions, and I am missing having a car that really engages me

so i am going to do something about that

option 1:
get a more expensive car that still offers some practicality but will engage me more:
possiblities: CPO AMG GT, 991.1 S, so 90-120 k cdn cars

option 2: keep the m240i and add a less expensive manual non-turbo car
eg 2012 s5, e86, for 30k ish

option 2 would mean I would have to rent another parking spot at about $250 a month and pay additional insurance

financially I would say it's pretty much a wash as the more expensive car will depreciate faster than the 2 less expensive cars (the non-turbo manual car might not even really depreciate)

but which will bring me more smiles per mile?

I really miss manual...so option 1 won't help with that

on the other hand, the parking spot will likely be a 5 minute walk away and I probably won't drive it all that much, it will really just be pleasure drives and life gets so busy that there won't be all that much time for that

option 1 allows me to drive a more engaging car more frequently

it's all very confusing ...which is why I've come to you for help

I've been a 2 car guy for about 30 years now. I always have a decent reliable daily driver, and for the most part I enjoy driving them. I don't usually look back at them or lust to drive them but when I'm behind the wheel they are enjoyable and they always serve my needs well, that is to say getting groceries, going to the garden centre etc. And then there is the toy, there is another thread on this very subject by the way. I always have a second car, and if you are like me you are always looking although I hope I've landed on the forever car with my 993. I love some of the cars you suggest and you need to get what fits your needs, but if you love the stick there are some great older cars out there, and some of them are holding value and hopefully appreciating any air cooled Porsche, 1M BMW for example. Good luck.

No. Buy one kickass car and drive it everywhere and anywhere. Life is too short for garage queens and beaters.

I have put 90k miles on my 1M and I've loved every second of it. So glad I felt free to do whatever I wanted and was not chained to any "rules".

The most "smiles per mile" is always treating every day like an adventure...

I don't drive a beater, and I thought about getting a 1M for my toy. No garage queens here my friend.....but I don't take my 993 to the garden centre, well not very often. My daily is AWD which is handy given our winters.

I have been looking for replacements for my 135. Has to be non turbo. Really want a 128i msport 6 speed but keep getting distracted by 2004 Z06's. They show up regularly with less than 40000 miles, clearly garage kept, some completely stock. Stock they will do 11 sec 1/4 sub 4sec 0-60. And usually less than 25000 bucks!!! There can't be a better performance/ price combo than that available. Of course the interiors chafe at my BMW sensibilities and you have to endure the gold chain leisure suit jokes from the unknowing.

If you don't like the 240, which I don't blame you for, drive and find something you want to be in every day. If the purpose of the second car is for your lady, then go for it.

I appreciate having multiple cars. Options is a good thing. I have a commuter, a track car and x5d. Contemplating adding a revolving door for a 4th so can pick up things I think would be fun, sport bike, old land cruiser, land rover, or bronco, old big convertible, old 50s pickup, arm, e39 m5 and so on the list wont ever end and cant own them all but might be fun 1 at a time.

It sounds like the root of your issue is that you're not happy with the M240i. Maybe you should just replace it and take it from there?

That said, if you got rid of the Cayman for practicality purposes I don't know why you're looking at AMG GT's and 911's.

I'm a big believer in having a 'fleet' of fun cars, btw. It just doesn't sound like that's your real problem. But maybe you replace the M240i with something that is fun, but allows you room in the household budget to add another car later

Exactly what I was wondering?...

For my part I had 3 cars for a few years(only for myself) but I'm downsizing to only 2 now, I like to have a reliable fun daily and my tunes 300hp/500lbs of torque diesel Q5 is freakin hard to beat. The M235i is tunes to around 400hp and is really fun but will éventualy be replaced by an M4,M2 or something else.

There are so many great choices right now GO drive everything and you will have your answer.

I've been through periods of multi vehicle ownership, generally something fun and 2 or 3 more practical vehicles.

Given the parking situation, I'd get 1 decent car you enjoy everyday.

I'm also on the 1 great car train. If you'd stick with one car would it be possible to go for a Panamera since you're already a Porsche driver? I've heard people rave about the driving dynamics even though it has a higher weight, don't know if that depends on which engine you get.

Otherwise, slightly cheaper I believe would be the Porsche Macan. Obviously you'd sit up higher but I've heard such great things on it as well, it would be worth at least test driving.

Also... Alfa Romeo Giulia Quadrifoglio?

I like having multiple vehicles, one makes you appreciate the other.

But only you can decide what's best for you.

I struggle with this same 1 car vs 2 cars dilemma all the time myself. May I recommend a 2019 Miata (hp bump to 181) for your option 2? I currently have an M2 DCT as my only car and I am considering adding a manual Miata in the near future.

If you can hack it.... and it sounds like you can...

718 Cayman and also the cheapest go cart lease you can find to beat around the city streets of Toronto.

Go with 2 cars. A fun manual and whatever else. Sounds like you should move on from the 240i for sure.

I have always been a 2-3 car guy. Usually, I go with one nice one and two so-so ones. However, this time I went with a brand new DD that was up there in price and still have a fun weekend car that is up there in price and performance wise is hard to beat for the price. I say 2 cars and find a fun DD but a have a second one that gives you a raging hard on every time you see or think about it. At the end of the day my decision was:

M3 ZCP for my DD
ZR1 for going full retard

I do get your point. I once had 2 cars (a 1990 plymouth laser and a 1990 300Zx that was nicely modded. The 300Zx was double the price of the laser...but in the end I drove the laser about twice as much as the 300Zx...I probably missed out

a 991.1 is more practical than a cayman, more space and a back seat in a pinch (admittedly not for normal sized adults or longer trips)

yes the AMG GT does not fit that bill...but she also really likes it and the trunk is actually a decent size...it's the kind of compromise we might agree on

Kickass snow tires = no need for winter car.

I used to commute 3 hours both was even in 15-20 inch blizzard snowstorms...in the 1M...no issues. I promptly grew many more chest hairs.

There is purity in buying your dream car and driving the hell out of it. Is there a place for people to own multiple cars for leisure? Sure...if they are from different eras (e.g. classic car...maybe like your 993 although it's not old enough for me to call a classic car yet).

I do find things to be uninspired when people buy a car like a new 911 or M4 or whatever and then drive a Civic to work...pitiful! Most people who do that sell their "pleasure car" after a couple of years as they've formed no actual bond or affinity for it—-because they never used it!

Lastly it is easy to well maintain 1 car. You can follow any issues closer and with more attention. When one drives a car a lot it feels like you're fully invested in it—-never feels like that with multiple cars (and yes I've owned multiple cars at the same time in the past).

I love having more than one car. If you DIY repairs it makes things much easier since you don't need the car monday morning for work. All of my cars are paid for and owe me nothing and each have their purpose.

My GF daily drives the 2006 E90, I daily my 2009 E90, and the Jeep is used for towing, snow, hauling stuff, camping, and whenever the other cars need maintenance.

Or you can have all that in your DD with the Hellcat. I bought it over another Vette because I wanted to be able to get my $ worth by being able to drive it all year. Already picked up snow tires for it. Once the Jetta sells, the Hellcat will be full time DD.
