Road & Track test drove both cars. I trust their data more: 335i 0-60 4.8 1/4 mi 13.4 35i 0-60 4.8 1/4 mi. 13.3 BMW says the 35i hits 0-60 in 5.0 seconds with DCT. So R&T ran a faster time. The Z4 has a 121 lb weight advantage on the Coupe, so there may have been a slight variable between the 2 R&T tests that accounted for both cars hitting 60 in 4.8 seconds, instead of 35i having perhaps a .1 sec advantage. The 35i did hit the 1/4 mi .1 sec quicker. So, we can at least say the 35i is a "hair" quicker, but not that it "kills" the coupe. |

pretty sure it depends alot on how decent of a driver you are. if your competitions is a crap driver you will always win...pertains to published 0-60 times...as soon as i can figure out how to measure it accurately (i'm in a military police unit, so maybe "misappropriate" some government assets in the patrol cars to accomplish lol) i will post my time. (just kidding about the misappropriating thing...would never do that hehe.

The G Tech things are pretty good. I've even heard the iPhone apps are good for measuring 0-60 and 1/4 miles as long as its securely mounted.

I would guess that the Z4 35i is slightly quicker than a 335i but not quite as quick as a 135i. The Z4 weight is in between the others and all have the same gear ratio in the 6spd manual. A Z4 DCT would have a slight advantage. It also has a slight rear weight bias for better traction.
Bottom line, all are so close, it depends more on driver skill, and a successful launch. FYI, The Z4 is among the quickest cars I've owned but not the quickest. A '95 3000GT VR-4 had 320hp and AWD. Easy to launch hard. Best 0-60 reported was 4.8. An '02 M5 had 394hp and limited slip. Best for it was 4.6. My '05 550i with sport auto has a best time of 4.9. The Z4 35i DCT best time is 4.8. Although it doesn't feel as quick as the 550i. Of all the cars, the M5 felt the quickest. Its problem was smoking the tires if too aggressive. But the differences are so minimal that I'd probably not be consistently faster in one over the other.

R & T ran the 135i Coupe 0-60 in 4.8 and 1/4 mi 13.4. Identical to the 335i Coupe. |

i've said it before and i'll say it again...
a tenth of a second on the 0-60 or quarter mile DOES NOT mean cars are the same... all around agility, weight bias, gear ratios and center of gravity will change things in the real world... for example... a bugatti veyron got smoked by a pagani zonda going around the top gear track... BUT at the same time the mclaren f1 beat the veyron in a straight line up to like 125mph and then the veyron was ghost for a clear win... |

i still think the gear ratios are different for the manual. at 100mph in my z4 im at 4000rpm, in my 328i 100mph is about 3600rpm in 6th ( i would think that the 328i and 335i have same ratios)...i have the itune app for 0-60, but never got it to work properly. will look into g tech

To Blue:
I already replied to the OP, my second post was backing up military because you were questioning military's 3.0 ability to keep up with 335i sedans or coupes. and the topic was not to question the Z's 0-60 but to get eveyones "up-to-date" on how they had been enjoying their Z |

...but I am certainly not questioning the 35i's 0-60 time. I believe the R&T figure of 4.8. My 35i certainly feels that fast. It might be interesting to see if the 30i could keep pace with a 335i coupe, but based solely on the R&T test figures, it just seems impossible, as the 30i is a mid 5 second car. Even if R & T test drove it .2 seconds faster than the BMW claimed time of 5.6 seconds, it's still a half second or so behind the 335i and 35i test results. Perhaps if my grandmother was driving the 335i and Dale Jr. was in the 30i, it might be close. Last edited by BlueZ4AZ; 11-16-2009 at 04:41 PM.. |

![]() To everyone else, how are you guys getting these ridiculously high MPG numbers? I think the EPA rating is 17 city / 24 highway. I've been averaging about 17 mpg. But then again it's all stop and go city driving for my 3 mile commute to work ![]()

I suppose... Just seems like everyone else is getting better gas mileage here. It's actually little bit better than my 335i, which got about 16mpg average.

Let me get this straight. I was the last person to post on this thread way back in November 2009, (Post #33). Then, the very next person to post was the other day, which is 3 years later?
Did it take everyone 1100 days to formulate a response? ![]() |
