Anyone know anything about older Mazda RX7 ?
This has been sitting behind my grandma's neighbor's house for years and I want to know is it fast?
I believe it's either a FC Series 4 or Series 5 Mazda RX7. So based upon this it has a 13B turbo engine. Are these fast? Any knowledge about this car is appreciated! Thanks |

They're pretty slow in stock form but they're popular tuner cars so the aftermarket support is MASSIVE. You can make these things as fast as you want. Two different F&F movies had them which helped the tuner market along.
Man you weren't kidding that the car has been sitting. Look at how the tires are sunken into the ground. |

LS motors are popular swaps. But the reliability of the 13B can be terrible. They like to break, often.
If it's been sitting long it's probably rotted and not worth it's own weight in steel scrap.

The Wankel engine is such a great design in terms of what it can produce despite such small displacement. I had a 05' RX-8 before my E92. It was light, nimble, but low on torque and did not get good mpg. I usually averaged 22 mpg which was what it's sticker said. But I loved it for it's handling, like it was on rails. The engine was a NA Wankel unlike the TT Wankel in the previous RX-7. The car operated very similar to a honda engine, all the power was in the high RPMs, especially after 5500, all the way to its 9k redline. I miss the car, but not it's low mpg and torque.
I would check out the RX7 forums for more info, they'll give you an honest opinion for sure! |

Turbo IIs are great cars. The body looks pretty decent actually. I say get the motor rebuilt and balanced, get a bigger turbo, fuel pump, and do some proper tuning. Those cars can be batshit fast on only a 1.3. And they blow fire out the exhaust while doing it

They were really good cars back in their time but not very reliable. One sitting for that long can't possibly be a good idea though unless you can get it near for free...

The old 13B rotaries are terrible. I've seen so many in shops getting new seals and rotors. They're fun when they run for sure, but be prepared for lots of repairs and maintenance. If you get it for like $500, take it, what's a few grand to get it running?

I know a shit load about 2nd gen rx7's. This is an s4 Turbo II, so 87-88 (89-91 were S5) so it has the low comp motor, not particularly quick but fun to drive and they take reasonably well to mods as long as you give them enough fuel. Only thing I can see strange is the hood, should have a scoop for a T2 but it was probably changed for a front mount (and t2 hoods can be desperately hard to find, ask me how I know) Do you mind me asking where this thing is? I've been looking for a proper t2 project (I miss my old 87 T2) and cant find anything other than NAs with turbo conversions.
On the reliability side, the rumors are pretty true, mine was always under the knife as were my friends'. Blew a motor around 130k and then again at 150k with just a turbo-back exhaust, no other power mods. Most people will tell you to keep a spare motor and rotate them as they need repairs LOL Last edited by fcman; 05-05-2014 at 12:07 PM.. |
