Smile Why ARE there so many S5 lovers over here?

So many people seem to have bought 335i, a very nice car, and bang on about how great it is, and how the options were, and so on, but lately so many topics are started on how good the S5 is and the hell with 335 - by probably same people!

So who is buying majority of 335i coupes? People with lots of money to spare on a lease who chose BMW because it was cool at the time it came out, regardless of what it was as a car objectively, who are ready to switch to whatever the other 3 from German Big 4 offers as soon as something looks better? People who would have not spent 50k on Lexus or Inifity because they are not.. eh 'german luxury' cars?

Or people who think that Audi actually offers better quality, price, economy and are objectively seeing that 335 just could have been done better?

Or is this all about the looks and not substance, and the BMW all of a sudden looking dated compared to Audi's latest offerings?

I feel if it's the latter, it is quite funny, considering how BMW got so much slack from the press for trying to build a car that looked so cutting age and unlike anything else. Think 7, Z4, 5er..

Are many casual BMW drivers here are just admitting that Audi was just better at executing this idea?

I only ask these, as i am puzzled reading topics on how great S5, from people who own 335s!!!

But I think I have a solution - BMW needs to do in order not to lose a certain percentage of its customers who are swayed by Audi's good looks, is simply redesign slightly its 3 series optics - make them more similar to A5s front and back, in other words MORE LEDs. That simple thing apparently what makes people go oooh and aaah over the S5.

May be, just may be, the people who are atracted to S5s are kinda missing the point of BMW.. the driving pleasure it gives, not aesthetics.

Yes, of course, otherwise why comment on them? I drove both cars, and while I can't afford to buy either of them because let's say, the 335 here in base trim costs 70000usd, i can definitely understand the difference between them. Colleague owns 335 at work, while former uni roomate runs the Audi dealership. So plenty of time to look at S5, and long time before they were available for sale in US as well.

And if I drove a Carrera GT or anything more expensive in your "fu(k the global warming" garage, what would your smart ass comment be then?

I think that s5 is a beautiful car like the 335.. I have always loved good-fast-looking-cars despite the brand they represent. Brand-fanatism isn't my thing.

About the same thing to be honest...

They're both great cars.

Each have nice qualities, some of which are better then the other.

Bottom line, who cares?

Having just placed my order for a 335i Coupe last week, I can honestly say I considered the S5 seriously.

For me, the S5 is a drop-dead gorgeous car in person, has a fantastic sound, and a well-built interior. All this being said however, I went with the 335i for three main reasons:

1) The performance gain in the S5 over the 335i is not proportional to the price difference.
2) My car will be my daily driver - the vast majority of it's workload will consist of a 9-mile commute to work (in traffic), weekend trips to the grocery store, and an occasional road trip to see family. While I would not call the 335i a "green" car, it is certainly greener than the S5. With premium fuel prices climbing combined with nearly all of my driving falling on the "city" side, the 335i is the better choice for me.
3) As vain as this sounds - if you can't make the sunroof slide back, then why install one in the first place.

Again, this is a very personal choice; both are seriously great cars with their own unique set of pros and cons. Each person will have to weigh these against their set of priorities and requirements and make a purchase based on the result.

Ahhh, actually people DO buy Audis for the driving pleasure and performance. I have one and it's a great car all around and handles very well. Not aesthetics? Who the f... buy's a car and doesn't put a lot of purchasing emphasis on aesthetics? Sorry man, I'm not feelin it.

As far as your original post, I guess the S5 is in the same class as the 335i/xi since the price difference is a few k. Thus the threads on the S5.

the new audi S5 is sooooooooo nice inside. the interior layout is like a DRIVER's car. On the other hand, i'm not impress with my 335i interior layout. I haven't drive the S5 yet .. but the exterior and interior style, i gave 2 thumb up

Plus the new B8 chassis, is much better than Audis previous cars. Drive it, you will see!

But you seem to imply it does, which is false. Dude, it's not about you, and I am not jealous of your cars - sorry if this isnt the reaction you expected!

I only asked, why did people jump ship so easily from BMW to Audi because Audi just looked better to them, thus questioning reasons why they bought BMW in the first place (i.e. it wasn't because BMW was a driver's car). Some of you say that Audi's are driver's cars, but I still think BMW beats them on that front, and design wise I didn't really get all the fuss about the S5 - yes it looks good, but look at the size of that thing... and the ride, and the price, and the fuel consumption - not to mention their awful coma inducing gray interiors.

I did. I'm not comparing Audis vs Audis here.

oh my god!!!!! the s5 is a closer comparison to the 6 series in size...it is huge and it drives very boaty compared to the bmw...and that is just an s5...hell the 335 beats the rs4 around a track and the rs4 has 120 or so more HP!!!! the only thing i can see is nicer interior appointments and sometimes eeven those just look overdone on the audi....still i think it is a good car but for the money i would rather have the 335 esp for mod potential!!! the bmw 335 just feels more like a small car and the s5 a small boat!!!! seriously it still felt stable but just not nearly as stiff as the bmw....i don't get it cause VW has tons of money guess they don't have great engineers working in the chassis department of audi's performance division...esp if a 335 is a faster track car and the audi has awd and such...just strange...you would think for the money and the hp difference an rs4 would kill a 335..guess not

if 335 is a nice car and is what we chose that doesnt mean we should deny the beauty and the positives in the S5. that's just ignorant.

Prejudice even when it comes to cars is pretty stupid IMO.

People are ready to jump ship because if you are like me, and got here in July 2005, you have had your car for almost three years. Its time for something new. I just wish the finances were there and I wasn't apartment shopping instead.

I bought a BMW 'cause I wanted a BMW.

The Audi is not a BMW, if I wanted a cheaper a car I'd buy a Acura.

Who cares about the S5, really. If you like it, buy one.

Clearly some people like it for the interior, great. It is a little to old man for me.

One problem I have with Audi is customer service. They suck at it in Canada. I can't comment for the rest of the world.

What do you mean a 'cheaper' car ?

Last time I checked the S5 is more $ then the 335i.

Audi > Acura
