Gshock Watches?
Hey guys I know these aren't the best watches, but I need some advice. I am looking for a decent looking tough watch. I will be using it for skiing, mountain biking, camping, etc. I've heard a lot of good things about the gshocks. Do you have any advice on which gshock i should get? Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Don't let yourself be duped into equating the price of a watch with it's actually being better. You'll spend a lot of money only to have your expectations dashed if you do that. I'm not telling you not to spend a lot of money on a watch. By all means have at it if you want to. I'm telling you not to expect the watch to be better just because it cost a lot of money. Spending more money doesn't buy you better timekeeping or greater longevity or all that much of anything else that tangibly improves a watch in ways that'll matter in one person's lifetime. From a watch guy's standpoint, there's not much reason I know of to prefer one G-Shock over the other for skiing purposes. That isn't to say there are no such reasons, but that I haven't ever thought about watches and skiing. I wear a Sub when I go skiing, so you can tell that a purpose built ski watch isn't something I've focused one. Sorry. Were I choosing any Casio specifically for skiing, I'd probably pick a Pathfinder or Protek model. These seem like good choices to me. All the best. Casio Protek PAG240B-2 (~$200) Casio Pathfinder PAW2000

+1 on Suunto watches!! I have a couple of them, but i also own a G-Shock. You're not going to go wrong with either option.

You could always get a Ploprof if you want to completely blow the budget, it's indestructible. With that and a G-Wagon you could invade Poland.

Well awesome watch but since I'm not interested in Poland or feeling the price tag I'll have to pass.

I have the G-Shock GW3500B. It's digital and analog. LCD digital displays are difficult to read with polarized sunglasses or goggles. With this one, you can read the analog time without taking off your goggles.

http://www.nixon.com/us/en/mens/watc...ku=A3601428-00 Honestly the fact that I recommended you invade Poland then suggested a watch called the SS is purely coincidence. |

You could also check out an old school Freestyle / Shark or Ice. I've got a lot of fancy things in my winder but wear one of those on a daily basis to the gym.
EDIT: I was looking at something else on eBay and just discovered Ice did a BMW watch, see below. Not exactly my style but maybe worth a look. http://www.ebay.com/itm/BMW-MENS-ICE...item4ad3274f53 Last edited by BEM-S4; 04-15-2014 at 11:08 AM.. |

Thanks for all the responses guys!
I've got it down to 2 choices: GA1000FC-1A or Suunto Core All Black http://http://www.gshock.com/watches...on/GA1000FC-1A http://http://www.suunto.com/en-US/Products/Sports-Watches/Suunto-Core/Suunto-Core-All-Black/?categoryId=3

Agree would recommend positive display vs negative. The black dial is hard to read in low light.

Agree with Semi-Poor. I have the Core all black, love the watch but the negative display can be hard to see at times.

Agreed. However, I don't think twice about a $100 Casio, whereas I might for a $300 Suunto. Mine is also light as a feather. My co-worker's Suunto weighs a metric ton.
I have the G-Shock Atomic Solar. No battery worries, no timekeeping worries. Yes, I'm lazy when it comes to my timepieces. |

G-Shock are great watches for the price... they really take a beating and never give up.
You might want to check out 5.11 watches.. they are pretty good too. |

The new Rangeman series is a lot of fun. I got this Navy series version yesterday, alt/temp/barometer/solar/radio auto time set/compass.
The negative display is not easy to read, but willing to deal with it for the improved appearance. It's huge however, GMT on a Hodinkee Horween strap here for reference.
