It's quite obvious that BMW has raised the bar in terms of performance (and tuning possibilities

) with the F/I twin turbo 335i. Now, Nissan has also raised the bar with the MONSTER F/I twin turbo V6 GT-R as well. I would suspect that several auto makers will have to bolt on twin turbos to their sports coupes and sedans in order to compete moving forward. It's an exciting time for all consumers!!!

With that said, it will always take more than just adding HP/TQ to be the best or the fastest; it takes lighter weight, near 50/50 weight distribution, suspension, good looks, good quality, advanced electronics, etc. to be "the best" in class though.

Time and time again the compare the 335i to the S4 / S5 and the M3 to the RS4. Personally I agree with you and think it should be 335i vs V6 A4/A5 and M3 vs S4 / S5 and CSL vs RS4

You can't compare a F430 scuderia to a GT3, or a GT3RS to a F430, know what I mean?

Just because a CSL would hand a RS4 its ass isnt a reason not to compare them. Usually comparisons are done based on cost. Its from a consumer stand point ... if Im into performance I usually have a budget and I want to get the most for that money. So if you have 70K to blow you can get a new M3 or a S4 / S5 for about the same money ( I havnt seen a RS4 on a lot for under 75K) ... see what Im getting at?

I agree that the 335 should be compared to the a5/5. when did it all of a sudden become 335i vs s4.The s4 was always compared with the m3.

First of all, the CSL is supposed to be strictly made for the track. Yes the RS4 also is but it's not weighed down or anything and just doesn't have the track feel that is solid as the CSL (drove both when I was in Germany). Second of all, we don't even know what the price for the E92 will be but if I recall, the US price for the E46 CSL was around $80-$120k depending on the conversion and dealer you would get it from in Europe - although I can't recall clearly.

Theres not really a point comparing the CSL to the RS4 cost-wise when the price hasn't even been set yet. Hell, who knows if it'll even come to the US

I always thought of it like this:

BMW 328i - Audi A4/A5
BMW 335i - Audi S4/S5
BMW ///M3 - Audi RS4/RS5 (M badge with the R badge)

Audi is a little more expensive, looks better, but BMW performs better.

Just because it has been M3 vs S4 in the past doesn't mean it has to stay like that. I think that in the past, Audi placed the S4 against the M3, but it seems that lately they want the RS line, as their highest performing models, to compete against the M cars.

Price is one thing that you can use to base cars, but you can also use size/performance as other factors. Just look at Cadillac constantly comparing the CTS to a 5 series when most of us would see it as a 3 series competitor. In terms of size, its very close to the 5, if I remember correctly, but price wise its close to the 3.

We all know our cars underrated from the factory all bmw has to do is up the numbers a bit and bam back in the competition.
