blockbuster shutting down
http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2013/1...n_4226735.html
blockbuster closing its remaining stores and ending its mailing service. beaten down by netflix, video on demand, and torrents. a real sign of the times, had plenty of blockbuster nights back in the day. anyway, can't go wrong with torrents and peerblock (don't forget peerblock!!) |

Sounds like a Kodak moment (no pun intended).
These old giants, some of them adapt and some can't. Blockbuster had a lot invested in hard media but who's to say that they couldn't have survived if they went to a Netflix-like streaming model? I didn't even know they had a delivery service, where was the marketing at?! But yeah, who rents movies from a store anymore when you have Amazon Prime, Netflix, Hulu, etc., on every new TV and even $100 Blu-Ray players in case your TV doesn't have the internet capability. |

I'm also kind of amazed that they lasted this long. They took so long to adapt to the new netflix and redbox marketplace that happened and when they did, they weren't the established brand anymore.

Internet, streaming, downloading, that's all that will matter soon.
But, 10 Mbps download for internet is actually quite slow, at least for cable internet... If cable was actually available on my street, I'd have 30 Mbps. More populated areas have upwards of 50 Mbps. Literally one street down (about a mile away), they have 30 Mbps cable internet available. But I live in a growing development, and they haven't had the economic motivation to build cable lines down my street yet. If you go with Verizon Fios, the max is 75 Mbps. If you're lucky enough to have Google Fiber in your area (up to 1,000 Mbps), forget about it: https://fiber.google.com/about/ Didn't mean to be off topic, that just stuck out to me. But I have shitty DSL, so I'm jealous of anything over my lowly 10 Mbps.

We use to have blockbuster and we switch to netflix because I got tired of paying for my kids to go to blockbuster and rent $20 worth of video on the weekend so they can watch with their friends. Netflix even though the video quality can such sometime due to bandwidth issue, the kids can watch as much as they like and it does not cost me more than $8 a month and since the kids are not paying I do not care if they watch crap video. I grew of on VHS and talk about crap videos.

i see dvd rental kiosks at the supermarket here, the video store has gone out like the game arcade. there may be room for a few specialty/hobby shops but it's definitely out as a shopping center staple.

We have something called Red Box. It's a vending machine for movies. There is one walking distance from my house. I think a movie costs $1.50 or so. Bargain.

Although, HughesNet satellite internet already does it. You're capped at 40GB total with their best plan. You get 20 "anytime bytes" that can be used any time of day. You get an extra 20 "bonus bytes" to use between certain hours (overnight). That's why their plan sucks and no one uses it. It would be a better (faster) option for me where I live, and if it wasn't capped I'd do it. But my usage far exceeds 40GB in a month... I'm not talking about just surfing the web either hymen. You won't notice a speed difference surfing the web unless you're still on dial-up. If you have multiple people living in your home and you do any sort of internet gaming, streaming, and surfing, then you'll likely need more bandwidth. Especially if you do this at the same time as other people in the house. When I stay with my parents for a week or so, they have a slow, 6 Mbps download DSL connection. When my younger sister is streaming HD movies on Netflix, I might as well forget about trying to play any internet games without lag.
