Audi S5 - Race track test
Yap, I put my hands on this new Audi S5 yesterday at the Homestead, Florida race track.
The event was organized by Audi USA and gave the participants a limited but enjoyable test drive. The car at first sight resembles the 335 for its lines, Specially the tale light sand trunk lines. Big 19' wheels and nice design. Impressive look from the front and overall very decent design coming from the (my perspective) boring and fatty A4 design. The interior of the car is very well finished, specially the leather and the metal textures all around. Has (as always Audi does) loooots of electronics to play with. Including an electronic hand break with a push of a button. Cool. Sadly the back seat it's a little tight, smaller than the 2001 3 series coupe. Start the the V8 engine with 365 horses. Quiet, very quiet sound... I was expecting a little more like the RS or S4. We start on the race track a couple of rounds at moderate speed and then we went to a little over 120mph on straight line. My mistake was that the 6 speed engine went to fast to the red line 6500rpm and suddenly it cut the gas. Ouch! I don't know, maybe I'm so used to the sound of my 335 and I was not really aware that I got so fast to red line bcs. of the quiet noise. The other thing that disappointed me, was the lack of "push" even though it was a fast car and I was pushing to the limit, my 335 seems more responsive and fun to drive. The steering wheel is softer than the beemer at low and high speeds... this surprised also me a lot. In other words, the feeback is softer and not so accurate. Breaking was very good and the handling on curves was tight but not "racing" tight. At the end of the test we came back to the Audi guys, and asked the big question. How much? $70,000 for an S5 !!!!!! I don't know what in the world the Audi guys were thinking at the time they priced the car, but even though this is way better than the softy CLK, Is not a 70K value car. I feel happier now with my 335i . Still the best Car for the money. Have an Ultimate Driving Day! :-) |

this whole review to be honest is pretty biased based toward bmw because you own a 335 so your pretty much comparing a competitor car and of course when you own the opposition its going to be biased toward what you have even if you don't mean it to be that way. Also in regards to the price if they marked an S5 at 70k the rs4 would be cheaper, which if you thought about it makes no sense at all. Also you say the 335 is the best for the money which is in no way true. I mean cars come standard with cloth. The best car for the money would be cars like the G37, etc.

Well seems that the price issue (is what the Audi guy told me for a fully loaded S5) has generated more coments than the actual test drive. Let me tell you that I frequently test drive almost all german and american cars (for the last 20+ years), and I do love BMW but I also have a balanced and neutral criteria at the time I do my test. Still believe that the 335i is the car that do everything very well. And not me, but was "Car and Driver" repetidely said that is the best car around.

Well said. I hate when people are biased because of brand loyalty. Every so often nearly all manufacturers suprise us with a new model or something.

Also, the RS4 is still not far off the M3, think what the RS5 will do to the M3. Just the new chassis alone will make a big difference, and I'm sure we can expect a new engine. Personally, I've got hopes for a 4.0 TFSI based on the new RS6 engine. Rough calculations put it at 465bhp and 385 lb/ft torque. Compare that to the M3 and you'll see why I have high expectations Also, some good source say that we can expect a smaller engine than the RS4 and perhaps forced induction. I think my guess might not be too far off
