First Ticket WTF
I got pulled over yesterday by a state trooper on a motorcycle. Since I was in the right lane and actually being passed by other people, I politely asked why I was being pulled over? He said "speeding". I asked how much over and how it was measured. He said 64 in a 55 and by laser. I pointed to the Valentine and said she never squawked (and she always squawks when there's a laser hit) and why was I being pulled over when others were passing me. The J-O says, "because you're the one that was picked", and then went on to say he was also going to give me warning citation for the Valentine being a windshield obstruction. I can't believe they were issuing a ticket for 9 over and I also know that no laser ever touched my car. I believe they were just wanting to piss off the owner of the shiny Bimmer.

First of all, that sucks but that's more or less how it works. If 5 people are speeding and there's only one cop he has to choose one guy to pull over. Second, it wasn't very smart for you to talk about your radar detector. Cops hate radar detectors.

it's unfortunate that it's not fair. There's only one cop, and so many cars speeding. Now guess who the cop is going to follow? the slowest one.
it's bad to be the fastest speeder, or the slowest speeder. Also, i think you probably just ruined your chances of survival when you pointed at the radar. this tells the cop you usually are a speeder Edit: also, never leave your car shiny. there's a reason why mine is always dusty Last edited by !Xoible; 09-18-2007 at 01:03 PM.. |

He picked you because you had the radar detector.

Yep, don't point out the radar detector, folks.
The part about the windshield obstruction is BS. You should've asked for additional tickets due to your door pillars and rear view mirror obstructing your vision, too. Well, maybe not such a smart idea. As for the "fairness" of the ticket, were you speeding?

Try to be as polite as possible to a cop, yet a motorcycle cop. You have better chances playing it out if you admit your speeding & say your sorry. Tell the trooper the speed you are really going at and hope for the best.
NEVER, ask to see the radar gun, yet question their authority or it's all over. And cops hate radar detectors, so why point to it? Worst case scenario would she finding some other illegal stuff on your car and writing you up for some BS. |

Here go to this site, there is a guy there that can help you beat a Laser ticket.
http://www.radardetector.net Depending on the distance a motorcycle does not pose a big enough target for them to use a laser. assuming he even targeted you because beam spread of the laser, the lasers they use are not the high power ones with focusing lens so these things spread like a flash light does over distance. If you do fight it, never mention the V1 as a defense. Just attack the officers ability to target a motorcycle and get an accurate speed, it is almost impossible due to a something called slip effect, do a search on "speeding laser slip effect" |

Th OP said 'the cop' was on a motorcycle not himself.
In any case, its worth trying to fight it in court. At lease there is a chance you can get rid of it, rather then simply pay it up. Quote:

The slip effect is still valid, especially on the large slanting hood of E9x cars |

For less than 10 miles over the speed limit, you have a pretty good chance of dismissing the ticket or possibly lower the fine. You would need to describe the situation, i.e. multiple cars passing you, weather, time of day, traffic condition, etc. Definitely not mention the detector! Also best to draw up diagrams and such.
I did 86 in 55 (very situational here, trust me) and the CHP told me that he's being nice and quoted me 81 instead. I presented my "evidence" and I got it reduced to 71 in 55. So my final fine was much less. Good luck.

You were just trying not to be a traffic hazard by driving too slowly, right?

To all who pointed out how imbecilic it was for me to point out my radar detector, first of all it was where he could see it already, so I wasn't really alerting him to anything he didn't already know. Secondly, he wasn't the one who allegedly "shot" me with the laser. It was some other cop hiding in the weeds somewhere and radioing him. It was already "case closed" when I brought this up and it gave me a modicum of satisfaction to let him know I knew I wasn't the one and that they simply had a blue-light special going on. I've come to find out today that this is a regular speed-trap area where the limit drops from 70-60-55 in about 100 yards and they sit behind the 55 sign. I'm happy to see the tax dollars we spend being used to build such great public relations. :finger:

64 in a 55? That's weak...fight that shit, say you were going with the flow of traffic, people were passing you. Tell them you got profiled...
if you're black/asian/spanish, u can say racial profiling, and get away with this

oh you got the perfect ticket to beat, both officer have to show up, and the officer who shot you has to testify to what he saw and he can not look at the ticket to refresh his memory since it was not his writing so you get him to screw up on his testimony and then the second guy comes in he ends up staying something completely different and since the two do not agree then you got a win.
Look at the ticket closely, look how the described your car, if they left something out like 335i or just wrote BMW coupe and no color, you can simple asked them which BMW did they hit. I just beat a ticket with 2 officer and asked them which BMW did they measure since neither were in line of site of each other. I even brought picture of 3, 5 and 7 series asked them to identify with car the pulled over. |
