Historic Auto Races - Sonoma - L&M Porsche 917 !!!!
Went out to Sears Point (Sonoma Raceway) last weekend and watched the historic auto races. Checked out tons of drool-inducing race cars and had an overall blast with my dad and big brother.
One highlight of the day was seeing the L&M 917 Porsche that recently sold on Meccum Auction on tv for a whopping $5 Million. Absolutely unreal car. Beautiful. Stunning. Raw german whoop ass engineering. Just incredible. Other highlights - Jaeger CSL Can-Am car, two Porsche 935's, 910 Porsche, a dozen McClaren wild Can-Am cars, Shadow Can-Am cars, Porsche RS early 70's car that just ate up the track. Porsche 1959 718 RSK Spyder 'center-drive' If you ever have the chance... you must go. It's amazing the amount of money these people have and the collection of cars is just unreal. 1600 lbs and 1,000+HP.
0-100 in 2.9 seconds. 0-200 in 12 seconds. Dominated Can-Am. Some say ruined the whole thing. Porsche just outdid everyone else. I've had a framed picture of the famous 'Sunoco' blue and yellow 917 (Mark Donohue) since I was a little kid. It's in my garage to this day hanging on the wall. It's quite possibly the most influential and dominating race car every built.... some say. I'd have to agree. The turbos are enormous. 10 cylinders. There is a gear that comes out of the engine into a transfer type case that is vertical and moves the wheels. Totally cutting edge and classic Porsche engineering.
