Getting my 1st Swiss watch. Advice/Opinions needed.
Hi guys, I'm getting my first Swiss watch very soon. I've mainly been looking at Omegas and Tag Heuers and I wanted to get some feed-back on my selection from the watch-enthusiasts on this board. How do these watches compare? Which one is more reliable? Which one is more prestigious?
FYI: I'm turning 23 in about a week, so I guess I'm not terribly old and I want a watch that's still sporty. The perfect watch size for me is 41mm, anything larger would look funny. So lemme know what you guys think ! Thanks in advance. Omega Seamaster 300M Diver aka The James Bond Watch -I really like this watch. It's very classy; something I can wear with a suit, or very casually. Another noteable feature this watch has is that it uses Co-Axial technology. Apparently, it's more reliable and requires 9-10 yr service intervals instead of 3-4 yrs. ![]() Tag Heuer Carrera Automatic chronograph tachymetre w/ red needles -I was set on the Seamaster until I saw this watch in showroom. I immediately fell in love with it. The black dial and the red needles are so sporty and really fits the persona of a car enthusiast, imo. ![]() |

Both are great watches...especially for your entry into the expensive world of swiss watch collection, but personally I think the Omega is the way to go. It's reputation is stellar and the Speedmaster & Seamaster watches are classics.

Id say go with an Omega or something like that...whats your price point?
"TAG makes $6,000 watches and $600 watches, I dont wear TAG's" my old boss..... good point and also, buy a watch from a watchmaker..not a penmaker or a purse maker (i.e. montblanc, gucci, D&G..not sure who they are really made by) if you are looking around 2-4k omega is a good bet, you can get a baume et mercier (a little less sporty tho) If you are looking for a sporty watch like a Seamaster thats a good fit... ill be back with more info can you tell i love watches?...lol

![]() See, I've heard people talking about Tag that way and it really eats me up ! I've heard, "Tag is a poor man's Omega or Breitling." "Tag is a poor man's alternative." Comments like that are useless to me ! I mean, at least tell me why you feel that way. lol. The Carrera retails for appx. $2900, so it's definitely not in the same level as their F1 series ! My heart is telling me to go with the Tag, but it's rep/brand recognition is holding me back. ![]() Thanks, keep the comments coming ! |

Why dont you get the Omega Seamaster? In the classic blue.. I have one and it gets a lot of comments, primarily because its THE "Bond" watch..I gurantee you that you wont get any negative comments

Tag has so much automotive provenance though...out of the two, I'd settle for the Carrera, it's just aesthetically more appealing (to me), I love busy dials
![]() I nearly bought that Carrera 2 years ago, but ended up getting the Link Automatic which was a little more dressier for a little more outlay.

I'd say casio G-Shock...
![]() OK OK I'd go with an F1 series TAG. Well built, should last forever. Why not a Submariner or a Daytona? Sure the Rolex name is a little played out but that doesn't change the fact that their watches are very well made, accurate and reliable.

Well after reading this it seems Brand and a Fancy freaking Label are all you are worried about so I'd probably go with a Rolex OR a Gucci, etc... Make sure you get the Coach bag to go with it... OH OH and the T-shirt!!! ![]() Something that will really Impress somebody. ![]()

I liked your style Revils! lets hit the club!
according to the op's price point, any rolex aside from a pre-owned submariner is goign to be out of range... invictas are "cool" buy the Omega or a Baume or an Oris ( if you want an entry piece)

OK Good Point though... Oris is pretty damned nice, and Movado has some very pretty ladies watches out there as well that are very nice. But of course they don't have a Flashing "Looky Here" label. ![]() Anyway, back to the OPs original Point. I'd say Omega of the two you posted. Why? Cause they are solid timepieces and I believe the cases are bit thinner than the TAG, should fit better.

i have the carrera and love it. its a beautiful watch and looks even better in person. i love that its and elegant watch yet its not to out there and in your face like many are to day. if your not going to wear it every day i would suggest you look into a watch winder. and if its a watch that you wont wear often numerous people have told me that its a good idea to fully wind it about once a month to get all the functions moving.

The Omega has a better resale retention and movement. Omegas are IMHO the standard for consistant +/-5 second losses. Everyone else fails including Rolex. Thats one of the reasons for the longer service intervals.
Tags are like coach bags. They are everyones first into the hobby. Just because they can cost the same if not more than other brands doesnt mean they are better. I would never buy a tag for 2900, not considering I got my Cartier Pasha for a few hundred more and its appreciated in value over the past 10 yrs. Get the Omega, youll get more compliments from afficianados.

My fav watches = Franck Muller. http://www.franckmullerusa.com/collection
Between those two I'd go OMEGA. TAG's are for Tigers. |

I have had the Constellation for 13 years. I clean it once a month with metal wadding. Still looks new. Changed batteries 3 times. It is thin and tough. I am an Omega fan for life. My .09.
