Why is Premium fuel now 40-45 cents more than regular?
I have been using Shell V-Power 93 since I got my 335i Coupe back in 11/06. I used premium as well in my previous car a G35 Coupe. The difference here in NY has always been about 20-25 cents between regular and the premium grades. Lately I notice the differencial is between 40-45 cents in all my local stations. Not just Shell, but BP(Amoco), Mobil, and many of the others. Are the stations really paying that much more for Premium or are they just ripping us off?

What do you expect to see, 20 cents more for premium? So when it's $0.899 for 87 AKI like it was in 2001, 93 AKI is $1.099, now 87 is $2.439, so super should be $2.639?? Who says our HS are failing to teach math/sciences....

But back to the original topic, I have noticed a few gas stations keeping the premium gas prices level and occasionally lowering the price for regular (which gives a larger difference between the regular and premium).

And for the OP, the difference here is about 0.20 - 0.30 between regular and premium, with premium being 2.99 at the Shell.

I guess you don't follow the gas prices. Up until a month ago the difference here in NY was only about .25 cents. I do see the big difference because I also have a car that uses regular and fill both cars each week. A month ago the average here for premium was about 3.39 per gallon and regular was 3.15 a difference of about 24 cents. Since then the the prices are now 3.25 for premium and 2.79 for regular a difference of .46 cents. I am not talking 2001 prices I am talking prices in the last month.

it always been 10 cents between grades, but they HAVE been upping it to 12 or even 14 cents between grades
ive seen one or two gas stations go down to 9 cents between grades, presumably to test and see if people are actually up in arms over it i drove like crazy and filled up at those stations as much as i could the "supply and demand" is BS its just a new way to make more money, yes theres more refining involved in making premium fuel, but the demand for it IS less |

I completely undertsand what the OP is talking about. I didn't notice it until this past weekend. But premium was 39 cents more than regular in southeastern VA this weekend.

But hey, when regular was .999 per gallon we paid 1.199 for premium -- a 20% premium. I paid 2.759 last Saturday, which is only 7.8% higher than regular @ 2.559
