Is the 2014 Porsche 911 GT3 a Real GT3?
Interesting post from Jalopnik:
No manual gearbox. No hydraulic steering. No Metzger engine. The 2014 Porsche 911 GT3 has to be making some Porsche purists go nuts. Here's a closer look. Jethro Bovingdon and Evo Magazine got a very close look at the 991 GT3 before it was revealed just hours ago. Andreas Preuninger of Porsche Motorsport tries to assuage his fears. So what do you think? Is this a true GT3 or a damn good impostor? source: http://jalopnik.com/is-the-2014-pors...ium=socialflow

The video makes the car look great but to me it's just a beefed up Carrera GTS.

No 6mt kills it for me. Looks like I would nab a used 997.2 when the time comes.

Waiting for the RS...
Still good looking car. Still think the 997 design is the best, while the tailights look nice, they also bother me. |

I'm really sad to see this thread. It's sad to see one of the purist companies give up on the manual. I didn't honestly think porsche would do it but they are a company and if that's what the consumer wants then that's what they will build.

I'm sorry, but manual is NO fun when the cars are filled with electronic. The 997 GT3 and Carrera GT so as the Zonda had very little electronic. If you want manual get the small cars, like GT86. Now it is really bad the 4C has no manual. It is really the simple cars that need manual, the new 911 GT3 is not that simple anymore.

I need this alongside my M5. Just wish it was a 6mt or even the weird 7mt. 9000 rpm Perhaps in the next couple of years I will be fortunate enough to afford such excellence. I'll take mine in Mexico blue with black wheels and 918 spyder bucket seats!!

Given that PDK is superior to manual in every way (except "fun factor" for many people), yes it's a Real GT3. In some ways it's more of a GT3 than its inferior traditional manual gearbox-using predecessors.
It's less fun (for many people), but by definition it's more of a driver's car because it's primed for optimal track times with the superior PDK. |

While the new GT3 is cool and all, and all of the new technology and electronics will make the car ridiculously fast around any circuit, they've made it just that: an electronic car. Porsche GT cars were supposed to be the "purist" cars, with only simple electronics like ABS and maybe traction control. I think all of these electronics would perfectly suit say an Fcar, but never did I think that a Pcar, especially a GTx Pcar, would have all of these electronics stuffed into it. Granted DCT/PDK/w.e is the way of the future, yada yada, but still kinda disheartening to see this.

The problem I have with this car is now it has no excuses. You could claim before that - yes the GT3 is not the fastest etc, BUT it is more of a driver car and only those who can master a manual could fully exploit it and that you need lots of practice etc etc. It was a cult car. Not any more. Now it has no legit reason being slower than the GT-R, or the Corvette or the Viper.
20 inch wheels?? with the stupid centerlock? gaining 80lbs over the prior GT3??, rear wheel steering? I am not crying over the no manual option thing, but gaining weight?!! and the other gimmicky things, just not what I expected. |
