Who makes the best manual trannys?

So in your opinion, which car manufacturer has the best transmissions?

For me so far its gotta be Honda/Acura. But Im only 19 and haven't driven that many stick cars. And I don't have one. But I'm a porter at toyota...so that's how i learned. yea...those supposedly "new" cars have taken some abuse from kids trying to learn stick.

Honda? I gotta disagree on that. My mom has a Civic with a MT, and I hate driving that thing... plus I always feel like I'm going to put the clutch through the floor.

I haven't driven a ton either – Honda, Ford, BMW, Subaru, GM.
My favorite so far, WRX STi with the short-throw shifter... that thing was dead-on every single shift.

Hondas are good - they make some of the smoothest shifting trans around. I like something with a bit more positive feel though, so I'll go with Porsche. It has a similar feel to my BMWs, but without the notchiness. Also, it seems to me the BMW gearboxes don't like to be hurried, where I could shift my Porsches as fast as I was able.

I like the Porsche trannies.. They're smooth, responsive, doesn't kill you like the Ferrari ones and I can live with them everyday.

^i don't know why, but for same year production, i like the boxter s tranny more than 997 c4s, especially the "click" sound for the on/off clutch point in boxter s. btw, the c4s also comes with the short shifter.

Honda's and Acura's are smooth but the 2nd gear is sometimes very rough. I don't have this problem or experienced this on BMW's. I like BMW's manual tranny more than Honda/Acura.

I'm gonna have to test drive the new G37 manual to see how it is.

I had only driven Japanese MT cars at first. When I first drove a German car, I thought the clutch felt weird. It had a long travel. After a few hours it felt great.

usually companies outsource their trannies. they do not make them themselves. i am not sure this is the case with the cars you mentioned tho.

anyway, i hear hondas have the smoothest trannies.

I know audis have really smooth MT's. I have driven one before and was amazed by it.

infiniti/nissan MT's are very harsh, notchy, and hard to get used to.

I know Porsche's are amazing in the 911's. The 986 ones weren't as good. I'm a huge porsche fan. But I'm young so i've never driven one yet so I didn't comment on it.

I said Honda cause I drove a S2000 and the tranny was amazing. RSX Type S one was decent too as was the new accord coupe ones. And i here the one in the new civic si is supposed to be good. But haven't driven that yet.

never driven a MT porsche but i heard MT on them are pretty jerky by design. they are designed to be more sporty and take much more abuse so they are pretty bad (in a good way )

Until this date, I still think the S2000 transmission is the best that I've driven.

S2000 that I drove for a long while can't be beat.

It's so short, so confirming, so brilliant. I think its alittle too tall for daily use, I prefer the height of the RX8 better (and thats it, just height).

The S2000 stick/tranny is the best i've driven by far. Every other stick feels clumbsy in comparison.
But like others have mentioned, 99% of companies outsource the development of the tranny.

The Getrag V160 tranny is one of my favorite transmissions. It's pretty bulletproof in my opinion and it felt great the times I have drove a Supra TT and a few IS300's with the V160 conversion.

Another vote for the S2000. The RSX and Si is pretty good for a fwd. No mention of the Miata?

+1 for the s2k, I had a countersunk knob on mine and it felt amazing. The 997 definitely has a great shifter and clutch feel also though.

I think ZF and Getrad actually make the majority of transmissions for most auto manufacturers. I know VW/Audi make there own though.
