New C Class

Well right now we have a 328 coupe and i have a choice. I can give this car to my mom and get a 335 coupe w/o making the same mistakes as last time, i.e. not getting sports, OR keep this car and my mom get a new C Class. I kinda prefer the latter, but I really like that 335. So my question to you guys that maybe have drive the C300, is it a nice car? Is it worth not getting a 335? I know the price is a lot easier on the wallet and I am kinda worried about not having any four doors in the garage just in case of company. Thanks for you help.

If your considering a 335i because you made a mistake on the 328i then my guess is that your looking for some speed and power.

Your not going to get that in a C300. Its slower than your 328i coupe and doesn't handle as well.

However I think the C300 is a very nice car. Very comfortable and nice looking....but by no means would I consider it powerful.

7.2 0-60 is not good enough for me, but if it had the kind of power found in a 335i I would take it over a 335 sedan.

If you are considering the MB sedan, why not go with the 335i sedan? I test drove the new C350 and the C300 Sport sedans and the 350 was sluggish when compared to the 335i, the 300 was sluggish compared to the 328. Obviously there are other factors to consider, but I think both bmws are better choices.

Since it won't allow you to get the 335i I would say keep BMW's in the family and giver her the 328i.

But if you could still get the 335 while getting her the C that would be great. It saves you money and truthfully for her a MB is perfect very luxurious. Unless she is a speed fein.

Well I drove a C300 sport, and it turned out to be a nice car. Would I get it over a 335i? No. No way in hell. Reason being I like the TT I6. So much power it's intoxicating.

The C300 is a great car and easily the best looking FOUR door car in its segment imo. My demo was a dark silver (palladium silver er somthing like that) which really showed the lines of the car. It had a lot of depth. The attention to detail is amazing as well.

I had the same positive reaction towards the interior. It was all tastefully elegant, but not overly elegant. My only beef with it is the steering wheel...it needs some silver highlights or something...it just looks plain in an otherwise thoughtfully laid out interior. The instrumentation was very intuitive, but I'd need to take some time to memorize the two columns of buttons on the lefthand side of the COMAND screen. The seats felt great...coulda used a bit more lateral support, but whatever. The fact that you can stow away the screen when you don't want to use it was nice. Oh, and those back seats are useable just to let ya know.

The engine, on the other hand, was something of a dissapointment. It was reasonable for everyday driving (passing wasn't a struggle on the highway), but it hardly fullfills my needs for spirited driving. Not enough horses...or twist. The transmission worked wonderfully though. The 6-speed's shifts were almost on par with the STEP tranny's. The brakes were great from what I can tell. I didn't do any panic breaking or whatnot so I can't tell you how they'd fair in more extreme conditions, but it's just a demo car. They weren't grabby, so that was good.

Overall, I'd say the car that I drove deserves an 8/10 in my book. The engine was the main thing that botched things up in an otherwise great car. A better engine could easily nock it up to a 9. Let's hope they make one soon.

If you can wait, which I highly recommend you do if you can, I'd definitely look into it when Benz is going to supposedly going to release a new string of engines (rumors of TT V6?). If you need speed you're not gonna get it right now. Seriously though, I recommend that you head down to a local Benz dealer and go and test the demo.

When I get my BB Pearl back tomorrow I'll post pics. Good luck with the decision.

The main advantage of the C class is the interior space. As much as I love my E92, when the whole family goes out together we use my wife’s Honda Pilot. Unless you already have a larger vehicle in the family garage, the MB could be a smart choice for your mom.

As far as your regrets for not getting the sport package, if your problem is the excessive body roll, you can get an aftermarket setup (such as the 'Stage 1 Suspension System' from Dinan). Of course you will still miss the sports seat and the rims.

+1

No reason to go with an MB if you want a four door. Just get another BMW. If cost is a factor, Even a E90 328i Sport would probably be more fun than the Merc.

I'm just wondering: how many of you have actually driven it? It's not all that bad, and is actually cheaper (though you get what you pay for... ie engine).

How can you not see someone in his/her 20's driving one? It looks perfectly fine. I myself wouldn't be caught driving any other kind of Benz (besides the SLR hehe) so that's saying something.

That is a very dumb statement. First off the C class is like the 3-series it is for a wide range of people.

I was going to get the old C class before getting my 328i. I don't see why driving a Benz is bad especially at a young age.

I'm going to go take a look at one but as for being cheaper, I don't think that's entirely true. Load up a current C class and one from BMW and it's only about 1-2K more for the BMW but if you factor in the fact that the new C class pricing is not public yet, but supposed to be a little higher, the BMW probably will come out on top or at least even.

My mother in law wants a new Merc but she wants her headrest to tilt forward a bit. Something that Merc does not offer and had been a BMW feature for quite some time. In any case, I had her drive the 335 up to Reno and back and she wants a BMW now

I would buy the car that I like, not the car that other people like. So test drive yourself and decide intead of letting this forum decide for you since you'll be the one who owns the car. You know what you like or your mom know what she likes. Usually, ladies like the Merc brand more since most of them don't care about how the car drives.

I'm 22 and it was on my list of cars to drive. After test driving both the 300 and 350 it did not move on to the second round of test drives though. I think it is a sharp looking car, especially with the way the Nav lifts out of the dash.

Get the C63 AMG when it comes out! Of course, that is more in line with the M3 than the 335i, especially in terms of pricing. But the early reviews think that MB finally has a car to challenge the vaunted M3. I'm pulling for the M3, but I love seeing other manufacturers set up to the plate!

Do you realize that the previous generation (R129) SL600 V12 Mercedes has a 0-60 time of 5.9 seconds? Sheesh, these days cars are getting so fast that it's seriously warping people's concept of speed.

The looks of the new C are killer! I just can't get over the fact that the engine is lacking power.

+1 Exactly!

What I find funny is how fans of the 3 series have now become obsessed with 0-60 times, when it was handling and fun that was once the big obsession.
