Sign up for .Mac (www.mac.com). You'll get Backup 3 (http://www.mac.com/1/solutions/backup.html) as part of the package. Once initially configured, you'll be able to have push button backups to any data storage medium (external disk, DVD, or on-line Intraweb).
I backup to external HD once a week. If you want to have a full image of your hard drive, use Disk Utility.

if you don't care for exactly what kind of external HD you want, i'd check that site to find a deal. They had a 300 GB one for 50 dollars once! I bought three of them hahaha. Firewire is faster for sure, but i think we can all live with USB once in a while. Good luck backing up your stuff. |

I am in the process of backing up the important files on my iMac. I have already subscribed to the .Mac service, but the 1GB limit is not enough. I use .Mac to backup my program preferences and a few documents and files, but I have almost 100Gb worth of data that is important to me.
I've decided that the best plan is to have an external drive as well as an online backup. So, I will get one of these external drives: http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/firew...AL/MirrorRAID/ For online backup, I've chosen this service (can't beat unlimited space for $4.95/mo...it's actually half the price of .Mac): http://mozy.com My first backup is probably going to take about a month to upload (I've already uploaded 7Gb in the past 2-3 days), but subsequent backups will be incremental (only backs up new or changed data).

The Lacie is a drag & drop friendly unit. It'll show up on your desktop essentially as a 2nd hard drive. Just drag your stuff over to it and drop it in.
It's a GREAT box. http://www.lacie.com/us/products/product.htm?pid=10894 |

FYI, when OS X 10.5 (a.k.a. Leopard) is released in October it will have "Time Machine". This will allow a very easy solution to back up all your files to an external drive. File recovery is built into the Finder.
