Im from Beijing and i go back often, one thing that you never should do is buy food from street vendors. They are obviously not always clean and there are people who will use un-"natural" ingredients to try to make a buck.

So the moral of the story is: If you have money don't be cheap and buy from a shady seller, just go to a nice restaurant. Its not like food in Beijing/China is expensive anyway.

This is true and common sense, yet it makes you wonder about the rest of the country that's all.

does that include Shanghai as well?

I remember buying some kabobs from a street vendor stating it was lamb, but friends of mine were afraid to eat thinking that it might really be dog meat instead

a lot of people in Mainland China wants to make a quick buck, so they like to take short cuts and cheap (improper) materials, just make sure you guys go to nicer restaurants to avoid stuff like that in China

or just go to Hong Kong

At least you're getting your recommended daily requirement for fibre ( or was that fibreboard)

Also, on a plus side, better cardboard than meats of errr dubious origin, thinking *squeak* *squeak*

funny how you mentioned spray painted oranges...

i remember when my friends and i went to those tourist attractions, it was during the summer and it was extremely hot...so all along the streets you see street vendors selling nice, ice-cold bottles of water...

but at the same time you would also see these poor folks walking around looking for empty plastic bottles on the floor and garbage cans...one time one of my friends went to go use the restroom and as he washing his hands, he saw an old man with a whole bunch of used bottles and filling them up with water...

my friend went up to him and ask, "how much?"

the old man was furious

It could happen anywhere in major cities in mainland china. Unfortunately alot of these people are desperate to make money, most of them are forgeiners that come from villages or farms from outskirts of the city, i saw the news broadcast of the story before and they guy that was running the operation of making fake buns has a foreign accent very different from someone who would be born or lived in Beijing for a long time.

Thats a pretty ignorant comment for your friend to say that, you would actually be lucky if it was dog meat. I have eaten dog meat before in china and its not cheap...the dog's bread are not of your everyday house pets, they are closer to wolves and bred for eating much like how pigs and cattle are here, but anyway i digress. Theres a much much higher chance that the meat served at those kekob places are rat meat or just seasoned pork than dog meat.

as far as the first part, yeah, i totally i agree...i've been fortunate enough to visit serveral places in the world and while traveling through the streets of china, it has really opened up my eyes..hey, if i were them, i probably would have done the same...it's all about survival and what you have to do to make it..

about the 2nd comment, i kidded around with a buddy of mine who's from mainland about the same story..he said kinda the same thing, about how dogs meat was a lot more expensive and how it really actually might have been sheeps meat instead..chuckled and said it could have been a stray dog..i kid.

speaking of dogs, weren't all dogs slaughtered at one time in beijing?..
