Move from Vancouver Canada to LA. Nuts?

Got an offer for a tech job, at, of all places, LA. (Orange to be specific). Good move or dumb move? Asian guy, late 20s... I don't know anyone around the LA area at all...

Anyone familiar with both Vancouver and Orange to gimme their two cents? Thx~

I wouldn't, but it's not like you could go wrong either way.

At least it's not something terrible like North Dakota or Detroit proper. You don't have a wrong choice.

Isn't Vancouver one of the most desired places to live around the world? I'd probably stay there unless there was a significant pay raise with the new job offer.

Reason for the change is from hardcore tech dev type job, into tech marketing/business job. It's a transition that I've always wanted to go towards.

The tech market in Vancouver is limited, especially for non-pure R&D roles.

And yes, Vancouver is supposedly the most desired places to live around the world, if you don't factor in the making money and spending money part (high cost of living, expensive housing, etc). It lately attracted a large number of rich immigrants/early retirees from all over the world, making cost of living for the average tax payer even tougher.

You can always go for it, and if it turns out you hate it, then move back after a year. Sure, moving that far aint super cheap, but not the end of the world. Vancouver will still be there 12 months later, and maybe your career prospects will be better with the short term experience you got in LA, compared to if you didnt do it and stayed in Vancouver that whole time.

Lucky for you, this is one of those decisions that is 100% reversible with a relatively small amount of pain, unlike getting full sleeve tattoos, having children, etc.

No offence to Vancouver, its great to grow up and perhaps grow old there, in between you might want to try something else.
Take a chance while you have it.

Even if you find out you don't like it, you will kick yourself if you don't take the opportunity.

Orange County is really nice. I've been to Vancouver (when I was young... and I haven't lived there). I personally wouldn't give up growing up/living in LA for anything. But, I know some people who would think I'm crazy.

Do you have a chance to take a trip down to OC and 'check it out' before you move?

I would say do it! Just my 2 cents. good luck either way!

To me it would depend on if it's going to pay more or is it like a cut and pay? Either way moving that much it would have to be a nice pay increase...remember u will leave everything behind but it could also be a start of a very good new thing.

Up to you really...good luck with the choice though I'm sure it will work out either way.

My ideal destination was Bay area. Hence why I am a little hesitant.

Yeah. Definitely pay and role upgrade. Otherwise wouldn't have even considered.

I'd say, if money and career is more important, then move to LA, but if money is not an issue, then most definitely stay in Vancouver

L.A. is great. I loved it when I went there for vacation. Sunny days and warm weather made me feel more healthy and energetic. In the states you can generally make more money at a tech company. If you don't have something tying you down, I recommend you make the move. Like someone already said, it doesn't have to be permanent, so why not try it?
