ATT upgrades EDGE network, iPhone gets 3G speeds on Eve of release
Got this from bfest..:
http://www.engadget.com/2007/06/28/a...eeds/#comments Seems ATT has upgraded their networks for the iPhone...and they are reporting much higher speeds. "We tried some speed tests on an EDGE handset ourselves, and though it's been a little inconsistent, we've been shocked to find a number of runs over 200kbps. True, these kinds of speeds are theoretically possible (actually, little known fact, the ITU technically defines EDGE as a 3G standard)," but we'd never expect to see them in practice. Should make the iPhone's browsing experience a little more bearable if it holds up! According to wikipedia "EDGE can carry data speeds up to 236.8 kbit/s for 4 timeslots (theoretical maximum is 473.6 kbit/s for 8 timeslots) in packet mode and will therefore meet the International Telecommunications Union's requirement for a 3G network, and has been accepted by the ITU as part of the IMT-2000 family of 3G standards. It also enhances the circuit data mode called HSCSD, increasing the data rate of this service." Way too cool...this could prove to be a master stroke by apple ! |

kilobits != kilobytes
~200kbps is slow as hell. You can't even stream youtube video at that speed unless it's terrible quality. 200kbps = 25KB/s.

3G isnt much faster either buddy(try watching Youtube on Helio Ocean). Thats why they give you wifi. I dont plan on using EDGE at all. There are tons of wifi hotspots where i live.
