BMW and Hyundai to Co-Develop New Engine?
BIMMERPOST NEWS BMW Reportedly In Talks with Hyundai for Co-Development of New Engine Family BMW is not against collaborating with other manufacturers when it comes to developing new technologies, having recently agreed to cooperating with Toyota in developing next gen lithium ion batteries and with PSA Peugeot Citroen for hybrid technology. Is Hyundai BMW's next co-development partner? According to Reuters and Automobil Produktion (a German industry newsletter), BMW and Hyundai officials recently met in Munich over potential collaboration on new engine development. Through its sources, Reuters reports that the talks are still at an early stage and that the two companies have discussed a relationship for jointly developing and sharing costs for a new engine family, which can take as much as 1 to 2 billion Euros to develop. Automobil Produktion provided more salient info, claiming that the Hyundai Chairman's son, Chung Eui-sun, met up with a group of small group of top BMW managers in Munich to discuss the possible engine alliance. No surprise however that BMW and Hyundai have denied these rumors, with BMW CEO Norbert Reithofer denying the the alliance talks yesterday, claiming that "further co-operation partners are currently not foreseen.". A Hyundai spokesman has also said that the report is groundless and denied that the meeting occurred. |

Seriously? BMW, what are you thinking? Why would you want to collaborate a copycat automobile company?

This actually does make sense. Hyundai is not a competitor of BMW as nobody is cross shopping the brands. BMW might be getting some nice cash out of this and maybe hybrid tech. Sure Hyundai is a copycat but they do have some decent engineers too!

As buyers we might think "Hyundai? really?" but in the industry it's likely that BMW sees Hyundai as a company that makes quality products to serve a different market...a market BMW isn't in and doesnt need to worry about competition. And if BMW can benefit from the partnership, there is no reason for them not to do it. I think people assume that there is a massive disparity in capability among manufactureres in various industries when in reality, there isn't. It is just a matter of how much you want to put into the product, what you want it to cost, and who you want to sell to. |

Jokes aside, give hyundai a chance guys. They have been creating reliable and nice looking vehicles lately. 10 year, 100,00 mile warranty? Where else can you see something like that??? The new 2012 sonata's overall design look is so much different compared to the Honda Accord and Toyota Camry. IMHO, the Accord and Camry just looks like a conventional sedan and kind of looks plain. Hyundai really thought out of the box for how the 2012 Sonata's would look.

Money talks now.
I am assuming BMW is doing this for the Asian market and since Japanese yen is so high now, there is no point joining with Japanese auto maker to lower profit. Other Asian car manufacturers especially Chinese are not on par with BMW's quality standards. I do think this will effect BMW's image a bit. Don't think this will work if BMW and Hyundai is going for an middle or upper class vehicle. Probably cheap cars using BMW engine for the mass.

Stop being a bunch of fanboys and be happy that they continue with the R&D and are sharing costs! At least they won't pass on the buck to the consumer at its full amount. Oh wait, BMW tax...who am I kidding |

I doubt many BMW dealers have a customer walk in and tell them they are comparing a 3 series or 5 series with any Hyundai out there, not saying they don't make nice cars, just saying people are not cross shopping them. If they are looking at BMW, that means they are also looking at Mercedes, Audi, maybe Lexus , a few other brands like Jag or cadillac could even be thrown in there, all high end brand names, Hyundai is not. And if you drive a BMW don't kid yourself, all of us are vain even if we don't like to think we are. |
