You also need a stand, and humidifier sausage.
After each lesson practice and more practice. You will suck at first, and your fingers might be giving up, because strings might hurt quite a bit, until your fingers produce enough of some stuff to make them harder. Then you will still suck... But then you'll rock! When you learn it well worth it. Especially when you start making progress and noisy squeaky sounds become music. Good luck man learning playing acoustic guitar!

learn how to double pick I.E. pick back and forth. Also, start off by doing some exercises, for instance double pick 1-2-3-4 and then move up a string and keep doing that all the way down to the 12th fret. Tedious but it will help soo much. after you get that start alternating I.E. 1-3-2-4 and then up a string and then back down a string to the top and then down the neck.

nylon strings are mainly for classical music, and for picking. steel strings are for basically everything else and for strumming and picking.

My advice, don't take lessons yet. Go online, and find them for free. You will be paying some guy 60 dollars an hour for an exercise you could have found on google in 13 seconds. Trust me on this. Learn the basic chords, learn picking techniques, work on fret stretch exercises, and then go take lessons once you are past the basics. Through youtube, as well as some free guitar lesson websites, you should be able to learn enough to play hundreds of songs with a few simple chords, and be the coolest guy at the party. Just my .02

Congrats on your guitar! It looks like a steel string to me thought. You will benefit from lessons if you want to play well, and anything other than just chord banging (Which is still fun), and you can avoid a lot of bad habits.
Still, your finger tips will be very sore while you learn, and if it gets really bad(Mine bled I played so much), put drops of super glue on they tips of your fingers until your callouses grow in. It will let you push through to the next level, and callouses allow you to relax your chord hand while fingering and not push so damn hard which will make you faster and transitions between notes/chords easier. Good luck and post a clip of you playing! |

I disagree on the 'taking lessons' aspect. While getting started on your own is one thing, if you are serious about learning the instrument, especially a nylon stringed guitar, proper technique and teaching are a must.

Agreed with some of the comments above. I have been playing for about 13 years now. You'll waste money if you pay someone for lessons now. Get a lesson book and practice your scales and progressions as much as possible. Once your fingers understand the guitar neck a bit more it may be worth doing some lessons. But with the internet now days you can pretty much take them for free at home on your computer.

As for lessons, I strongly recommend actual lessons, or at least video course. Don't settle for free lessons from internet. Of course, you can try it. But, real teacher will help you get your posture, technique, and everything else right from the start, make corrections as you go. When you self-teach, there is nobody to correct you, and if you are doing it wrong, it will be hard to correct in the future. Even if you take just couple lessons to get the basics. Then you can practice and practice.
