The truth: Car and Driver magazine conducted an extensive study and found that for all but the most high-performance cars, putting high-test into your tank burns nothing but cash. According to the American Automobile Association, there’s about a 25-cent difference per gallon, or about $4.50 per fill-up if you have an 18-gallon gas tank.

The exception: If you own a Ferrari. (And if you do, what are you doing reading this? Go help the economy by buying something!)

There is nothing to discuss. Just more stupid reporting by journalists. They fail to mention the C&D article was testing the idea of using premium fuel when your car requires regular (http://www.caranddriver.com/features...emium_-feature). They found negligible gains by using premium in engines that required regular, but on the flip side, when they tested a turbo Saab and a M3 that required premium but were filled with regular they noted the following:

So pretty much if you cheap out you'll suffer lower performance and power all for what, $4.50 a tank? You bought a $35k+ car, either put in what the engineers designed it for or don't buy it.

Actually, depending on the situation and provided you know what you're doing, there are many situations in which manufacturer's recommended tire pressure is sub-optimal.

I read this earlier today and just had to laugh. Agree with the comment above. They dont explain that this would be for vehicles that dont specifically state the need higher than 91 octane. There are so many cars out there that actually require it. Its funny they add unless you have a ferrari. So stupid.

+100 to what Seminole said. My father borrowed my 328i a while back and filled it with regular. Even though the engine isn't as sensitive as the N54 or the M3 V8 I could still tell there was a loss of power. That was the last time regular fuel has been seen in my tank.

My friend's 328i had some weird noises coming from the engine when she decided to put in the cheap gas

95 is the lowest we got here, and i always put shell vpower 98 in mine. The difference (especially over highway) in mpg is clearly visible. High pressure injected engines should just decline to run all together when the owner puts anything but premium fuel in them
