Despite confirmation of turbocharged four-cylinder 1.6 l engines on Friday the rule could be modified if it is met by opposing opinions from teams, according to FIA communication:

"In consultation with the main stakeholders, and following the outcome of this consultation, a fax vote by the WMSC could be considered by 30 June latest to redefine the implementation date of these technical regulations"

Not sure I like everything i'm reading.

- Power units will be four cylinders, 1.6 litre with high pressure gasoline injection up to 500 bar with a maximum of 12,000 rpm, with extensive energy management and energy recovery systems (now known as ERS), reflecting the decision taken by the WMSC in December 2010
- The aerodynamic regulations have been based on 2011 rules, with modifications in order to improve the aerodynamic efficiency: together with the power train rules, this will enable a 35% reduction in fuel consumption
- The height of the tip of the nose will be limited to ensure better compatibility in a T-bone style accident
- A limitation on transmissions (gear ratios, number of gearboxes) in order to decrease costs
- The overall weight of the car must be no less than 660kg

BMW's did quite well in the mid-80's with the old 1.4l I4's. Not that the FIA lets anyone build their own engines anymore.

The new engine formula will remove the current engine development holds. But teams still build their own engines, namely Mercedes, Ferrari and Renault.

With the new 1.6l i4, McLaren has expressed interest once their deal with Mercedes ends.

I thought McLaren developed the engine and code for all teams, or was that just a threat a few years ago? I haven't been keeping up with things very closely the last few years, I'm waiting for Schumi to go away again.

The simple version is, a long time ago McLaren split into 2 different entities. 1 was in the US, 1 in Europe. The US McLaren was the engine department, and the European McLaren was the chassis. Both had an unspoken rule not to do what the other did.

My facts on this are sketchy as I read about it a while ago, but the US McLaren seems to have shut their doors, leaving the European McLaren free to develope their engines as they please, as they did with the MP4-12C.

So, as McLaren strive to match the Scuderia as a entire Automotive company, they will most likely start producing their own engines. The McLaren F1 team has never produced it's own engine before though I don't think. They used (pre-80s) Fords, (90s - 00s) Hondas, and (current) Mercedes. The reality is probably more mixed up than that though.

The electronics division makes the ECUs. Not the engines themselves. And I believe the engine manufacturers still program the ECUs themselves.

These turbos will be NOTHING like the turbos of the early 80s.

They have strict rev limits (12,000 rpm), and I would be surprised if they don't put in boost limits as well. We will definitely see a drop in horsepower and top speed, which will be sad to witness.

Turbo's are the way to go now, many car manufacturers are venturing into turbo engines (except Toyota here in the states) and with in the motorsports community as well. I think for F1 going turbo would be a nice change to the game and would make the races more interesting.

I think the races will become more interesting not because of just simply having turbos, but more because the engine development will be unlocked. So the engine can actually be improved and I'm sure not everyone will get it right.

The turbo idea isnt the bad one, its the stupid restrictions that are. Let them make whatever they want, 1.6 4cyl, 1.x 6cyl, etc... The RPM limit is retarded, no reason for it.

That would make it boring as hell, one team would absolutely dominate every season. That being whichever team was affiliated with the engine supplier who sunk the most cash into development.
