Looking at an E36

Hey, I'm looking at getting an e36 as a cheaper car to commute from Boston to Connecticut. Right now I am looking at manual 325 coupes but also sedans and other 3 series models for around $4k-$6k. I was wondering if anyone had some insight on which years and models are the best and what known issues they have. Also, I am not going to be putting too many miles on it so I don't mind if the mileage is kind of high but what around what mileage should I be looking at?

I read the post like five times, before deciding what to say. You can get high mileage '95 M3s for under 10k. Do the right thing. Be a man.

Lol it's just supposed to be a cheap car to drive to Ct once in a while. There is no point letting an M3 just sit in a garage like that.

its good advice though - the breaking down part

just because if/when it does breakdown it will be 50x more expensive to repair then a honda or toyota or something

Its a great idea, I have one as a second car, its a 94 318i (which is GREAT on gas) In that price range you can def find something nice, i love the e36 body style and very happy with it, if you take care of the car and not beat on it hard they last for a VERY long time.
If you dont want to spend that much, look into the e30's. I had an 86 325 which i bought for less then a thousand dollars (again just as a work car) and worked it to just about 230k miles. I sold it to a friend who then crashed it

I want an E36 because it will be comfortable for long drives and safe and still sporty. I don't care if it breaks down, we'll fix it, I'm thinking about possibly autoXing it but we'll see. My car is too expensive to keep lying around in a garage and only use maybe once a month so this is replacing my car temporarily.
