AMG Performance Driving Event 2011!!
Just returned from the MB AMG Performance Driving event in Monticello, NY!!!!
Quote:
So today was awesome, this event was great and even better it was FREE! Thanks to my buddy Ed who hooked it up. Overview: 4 cars, 3 runs. Each run = 1 lap. However they weren't the most organized so it was easy to get more than 3 runs in. My and my GF drove the SL63, CLS63 Bi-Turbo and the C63. Obviously the C63 was the most fun, lightest and honestly sounded the best. SL63 was a close 2nd. CLS63 - Gobs of power, not much turbo lag, felt big, held the course great. even though it was wet out this car had no trouble in the twisties and grabbing the pavement. Though it def felt slower than the SL63. Interior finish was amazing, just gorgeous in and out. Totally fun to drive and probably the most comfortable of all the cars. SL63 Sounded amazing, gurgled the whole track. Very comfy, interior seemed a tad dated for a 2011 compared to the CLS63. Very fast, very comfy in the turns and held the road great. Didn't feel like a $160k car though. No understeer and was just a thrill! C63 The best on the track, much lighter, didn't even notice the 50hp difference from the other cars, obviously they are heavier. Best steering wheel and actually pretty comfy. Didn't go over pot holes so I only know what I felt on the track. Def felt the torque difference from the M3, but honestly didn't feel any faster at all. Yes the torque kicks in earlier, but when the M is in the power band the M seemed to just have the extra kick. Totally fun car and obvious contender instead of the M3. Sound is awesome, def louder than the M, but again, when in the powerband, noise level is the same but just different sound. Have to say when I left I was still glad to be driving the M3, however when the C63 BS comes out that may be a different story. Can't wait to do this again next time they come around. The place was set up great, everyone was very courteous, and the prof drivers were great and helpful. Course was a blast and even though we only got 3 laps each, it was fun being able to take passengers in the backseat during the runs so you actually get to go more than once in each car. First time the GF was behind such a powerful car, she had a blast. Good times and great fun! Def recommend finding one in your area Here are some videos me and my GF shot, C63 sounds great. Track wasn't easy to remember, too bad we didn't get enough laps to really nail it down and remember the course. Course was a little wet but the AMGs performed great. So awesome none the less. My GF in the C63. She was a little afraid of the throttle, but did a great job and gave it a little gas lol Pics!!! Driving through the NY state clouds Arrival at Monticello Race Track oh hello Mr Ford GT... thing sounded ungodly. Unreal. rare estoril Guest area AMG History Me and Mi Amor, future cars? next purchase? course overview Specs The CLS63 AMGs were actually prototypes, not production models. AMG said they were going to be destroyed after the traveling AMG event was over :wtf: SL63 I drove GF drove the Matte Black SL63 CLS63 interior My C63 Nemesis on the way home

FYI, when they say they'll "destroy" it, i think what they do is strip it, put the engine and transmission on display and most smaller parts are recycled.
BTW, why is this on the M3 forum? |

Also wanted to mention how I'm still happy I got the M3 and didn't go AMG.

Sounds like it was a fun event. It's cool they had the new 2012 CLS with the 5.5L turbo motor. Would have been great to see the new E63 there too so you could compare the two. Also too bad there was no C63 coupe.
Did you try and pry some C63 Black Series details from them? |

I didn't drive the E63, but my buddy did. He said it felt like the fastest of the group. I have to say I wasn't as impressed with the CLS63 as I thought I would be. It was good, but not great. However after only 1 lap it's hard to truly judge it. I like the C63 sedan better than the coupe. It was fun!!!

I love the AMG packages, my concern with the C63 was the weight and how badly it eats tires, I'm glad the coupe hasn't come out yet - if that thing looks good I'm in trouble, especially if the BS comes out.
Maybe in 4 or 5 years I'll get older and jump into an AMG. |

That's what I'm thinking too. One of the reasons I stayed with BMW, but when the BS comes out I may jump ship.
