Since they're introducing the turbo 4 Z4, does that man the M version won't be the M3's V8? I can't imagine them offering 4, 6, and 8 cylinder versions all on one car... no?

That said, BMW has been offering I4, I6, and V8 in the 5 series for well over a decade. The I4 has not been offered in the US, but that will all change later this year. There will be the 528i I4, 535i I6, and 550i V8. |

SCOTT26 already confirmed that the Z4M won't be getting the M3's V8 (S65). My bet is that they'll use the same engine as the 1M, drop the sdrive35is from the lineup, and focus more so on weight reduction and handling vs overall power output. That said, they will probably do a little different tune on the engine to make it 350-360 hp. I don't know personally, but I would bet that with 330 hp in the sdrive35is, this thing is already quite a handful and more power on a wheelbase that short would be just nuts.

I'd have to respectfully disagree with you on that. The 1M was built on a tight timeline using what was in the parts-bin. For the Z4 M, I would be surprised if it were less than 400hp, and it could very well be 450hp+ as is expected for the M3. Just like the engine for the F10 M5 debuted in other M vehicles first, the next M3 engine could very easily appear first in the X3 M or Z4 M. Expect an M-massaged "S55" or if BMW debuts a new "N56" (or some other name) regular series I6 engine soon, then "S56" instead.
