Thoughts on Mirroless?
So been looking around for a dslr type camera. i'm really diggin the compactness of the mirrorless. my baby is coming soon so i want to pull the trigger soon. I've narrowed it down to these two. Any thoughts or experience?
Olympus E-PL2: - love the look and feel of this. very old school look which i like. They have a lot more lens selection. was thinking of getting the panny 20mm lens which everyone raves about. Sony Nex 5: - tiny as heck. movies are pretty good based on what i've seen and the jpg conversion is quite good as well - lens selection (for me since I don't have any other dslr camera which these can use with proper emount) is quite small. thoughts?

get the fuji X100. it's a fixed lens, but it's a 35mm f/2 and it rocks. definitely getting one for when i don't want to carry my brick of a D3 for non-business shooting.

I was very impressed with the seamless multi exposure stitch on the Sony - great if you like wide angle, also video very good with full zoom capability while shooting. I'm committed to DSLR, but I'm very tempted to get the NEX-5.

I have a NEX-5.. it's currently my most used camera because I can carry it anywhere.. with the pancake 16mm it fits in my pocket as well..
the sensor on the nex is the best part.. very high quality, low noise at high ISO and only a 1.5 crop factor vs. 2.0 on the m4/3 cameras.. I'd compare it's sensor performance to any entry-mid level APS-C SLR.. yes the weakest factor is the Sony lens line up right now but like the m4/3 cameras you can pretty much adapter any lens to the camera.. I currently have a bunch of Zeiss Leica rangefinder and old classic lenses on it and the performance is stellar. |

ok so i decided with the epl2 because the controls is much more natural than the nex5. too many buttons to navigate on the nex 5. Although i like how small it is as well as the flip screen. i got the panny 20mm pancake lens with it.
pix seems very good as well. this site convinced me. http://www.davidchuaphotography.com/...review-part-1/ i was really set on nex5 ,but since i don't really have any glass like some of you here, i'm basically starting from scratch.

congrats on your purchase! the Olympus is a fine camera..
but the thing i can't stand most about the m4/3 is that crop factor.. I'm coming from a FF world (5DI & II) and dropping down to a 1.5x on the Sony is bad enough.. a 2x would drive me nuts.. a 50mm becomes a 100mm telephoto on the m4/3, a wide 25mm becomes a 50mm standard. I guess if you don't shoot wide angle stuff m4/3 is fine.. Last edited by leemik; 03-18-2011 at 10:44 PM.. |

niiiice, leemik!!
I used to keep a d40 nikon with old 1950's nikon lenses. there's just something about the old glass. 35mm being my favorite focal length, I'm really looking forward to this X100. just can't fit a d3 in my pocket. :\
