Learning another language?
For those of you who have learned another language. What methods to remember, speak, document and practice another language have you used?
I'm in the process of learning Spanish. Methods so far...
Just looking for methods I haven't thought of. Thx in advance.

If you really want to "learn" the language you need to get something going like Rosetta stone so you can understand proper verb conjugation, etc. Granted it isn't very dificult in the spanish language, but once you learn it it applies to virtually everything and makes learning the rest (or understanding what other people are saying) infinitly easier.
If you just want to be conversational, then just do that very thing... Just keep speaking to naitive speakers and over the corse of a year or so you'll pick up most of what you need to know. |

lol
My GF is Spanish so she's teaching me. But yes I need some additional resources to learn on my own. Rosetta Stone is over $500+ so I'm trying to find some other methods.

Rosetta stone or "class" will get you the basics. But to truly learn another language you need to live it, be forced to speak it everyday, and for a long enough time to solidify it. Even then if you stop using it, like anything, it will get rusty. Everyone I know that speaks more than 1 language competently says there's a point where their brain isn't going back and forth between the language and their native tongue, that they simply "think" in the language they are speaking.
Edit: If your GF speaks Spanish, when it's just you and her speaking, try and ONLY speak Spanish, no matter the level of difficulty of the thought being conveyed. |

Rosetta stone is stupid. dont even bother nor waste your money. it will teach you if at best elementary level language, which imo gets you no where. if you are serious about learning a language pm me and i can hook you up with some websites. I am currently a student at DLI (google it), and can tell you that here we do not use rosetta stone. Best thing to do is buy a book of 500 verbs and learn to conjugate for females/males etc. also completely immerse yourself in the language by either dating a spanish speaking female, listening to spanish music, watching kids tv shows (in spanish), etc. you will learn surprisingly a lot in a short amount of time. here at DLI they teach students to speak spanish at a college student level in 6 months. obviously most of us wouldnt be able to learn that fast but some of us learn crazier languages in about that amount of time. i for example am in arabic and will be graduating here soon. hope this helps.

imo, immersion is the best all-around method. but if you can't go live in any spanish-speaking country for 6 mo-1 year, try taking some continuing education classes at a local community college to start off. it's cheap and convenient. although i am a firm believer that you'll never become completely fluent if you don't live where the language is spoken. maybe you could move to spanish harlem

I wanna learn other languages too and definitely have been looking into Rosetta Stone but it's really expensive. I mean at around $300-350 for 3 lessons I'd definitely consider it. But at $500+ it seems a bit much.
