What Scotch would you buy as an appropriate gift?

I have an employee that has his 40th anniversary with our company (crazy seeing how I'm 43 and couldn't imagine working for a company for as long as I am old) on January 4th. I would like to buy him a single malt and thought a "40 year old Scotch" might do it, if there were such a thing. Does anyone know of any they would recommend? Money isn't an object, he's a great employee and is worth anything I could get him.

Thanks.

Since it is his 40th anniversary a 40 year old scotch would be appropriate; however, they are not readily availible and you are on a short timeline to have one shipped. I recommend you get two bottles of 20 year old scotch. If you go with Glenlivet you can find them an any old liquor store. The number 40 is the key!

Thank you; I agree, the number 40 is key. I was worried about the timeline for the actual date as I know there aren't too many readily available 40 year old Scotch's around.

What's your price range? You can't say money is no object. A 20 year old scotch is going to cost at least $200 a bottle depending on the distiller. A 40 year old will cost at least $1000 a bottle. Again, it depends on the distiller. A 40 year old Macallan could cost you $10,000.

Go here, click on the online catalog at the bottom of the page and scroll to the single malt section. They will also ship to you. Now tell me you love me. haha

Nice gift! The only 40 year "reasonably" priced scotch that I know of (at least here in Canada) is Glenfarclas. Runs about 500-550 here. Most others seem to run $1000+ as ferrari355fi mentioned.

Thanks Ferrari355fi, great link!

I guess I should've quantified the price...I would pay up to $2500 for a bottle. I'll look over the link for something appropriate. I have a little time, his 40th anniversary is Tuesday, but he'll be out of town until Feb.

The reason I'd hesitate to buy him anything more expensive is because I know him, he would save it and not drink it. I want him to drink it. (And if he would like to share a glass or two with his most gracious managing director, I'd like to drink some with him )

Hmmm, that's interesting as I'll be in Toronto in 2 weeks.

Do you have any idea what his taste preference is? What does he normally drink?

I'm going to shop there, I'll be in NYC the last week of January. (If I don't pick up a bottle in Toronto first.)

Just out of curiosity, what is your favorite Scotch?

If you are going to be downtown Toronto the LCBO at Yonge and Queen Quay should have it.

He normally drinks Oban. I was thinking Oban 32 year, but it's impossible to find and I'd like to do something with a better play on "40".

No prob! Good luck - if they dont have it there they should be able to check for you at other Stores. Yonge and Summerhill LCBO might stock it too.

My favorite is Springbank and Glenmorangie. But, I love scotch so much that I have never bought a bottle of a scotch I've already had. I want to try them all.

I'd recommend Glenlivet 40 yr if you want to stick to the 40.

Oh, and if you do go to some store in toronto, check to see if they have Springbank 1971. It is hard to find, and absolutely amazing. It's about $2000 a bottle.

Not likely - 12 or 15 is about as old as you will find of Springbank. The LCBO will order pretty much anything for you, but you have to order by the case

If anyone can find a case of Springbank 1971, I have a buyer! haha... Besides, I see nothing wrong with "having" to buy scotch by the case

LOL - I here you, but If I came home with a case of scotch for $25K I might have a little splanin' to do to my wife, it would probably cost me a $25K shopping spree in NYC haha
