I have a Canon SD200 and it works great. It's only real drawback is that the flash is a little weak but I'm sure the SD500 has a better one.

Whats your price range? Canon Rebel XT is probably my favorite out there, but its about $1100. If you want to stay at about $450 for for the Canon PowerShot SD500. If you want to go lower, the Canon SD400 is a good choice too. As you can tell, I am a big Canon fan, you can;t go wrong with them on the digital camera side, stay away from them for camcorders though.

Digital Rebel XT
Have long loved my Canon digitals. Currently have an SD500, but was in France this summer with a relative who had a Digitial Rebel XT. Quite frankly the pics on the XT are far superior to the SD500. Just purchased the XT for myself and am thrilled with it. List price may be $1000, but found it on line, fully authorized dealer, for $742.

I also need a new camera. I have an Olympus Stylus 300 Digital 3.2mp, and it works fine, but it doesn't take as nice quality as the new cameras now, and I love taking pictures.

Digital SLR is a different class than the point and Shoots.
I have an SD500 and a D70 Nikon. Use them for different things. If I could do it over, the SD500 is a bit overkill on the pixels, usually set it to the M1 or M2 setting so a SD400 would of been fine. |

Pentax S5i. Love this little guy. Small enough to hide in your pocket. Has great optics (the most important part, you only want nikon, canon, or pentax since they have the best lenses) and has captured a number of "clutch" pics of friends doing some stupid crap.

Be sure to check out the buyers guide on DP Review (http://www.dpreview.com/) before buying. They perform some of the best digital camera reviews out there.
Bottom line is you get what you pay for. A digital SLR is likely your best bet (as long as you put some good glass in front of it) for those serious about photography. But there are some good finds in the compact segment--just do a little homework and you'll likely find a great camera. Justin |

I just picked up a Canon SD400 yesterday. Its a VERY nice 5MP camera and the price of $292 was an added bonus.
Great pictures in an amazingly small package. Michael

If you want REALLY good pictures, then go with an SLR, either Digital or Film. There are many more things you can do with the camera that a point and shoot simply can't do--ie...make object in focus while the background is blurry, or everything in photo is in focus. Ability to add filters is a bonus too.

A good friend, a professional photographer uses the Nikon D100.
He used to use a Fujifilm FinePix S2 but converted due to Fujifilm's huge appetite for battery power. He gets most of his supplies from B&H Photo . B&H has a lot of high quality used equipment. New users, keep in mind most top of the line SLR's don't come with lenses. Hope this helps. Niko

I've been using a Canon S70. It's a great compact camera with 7.1-megapixels. |
