Hey All,
My brother is a Marine Corps Officer serving in Okinawa right now, been to Iraq, and will likely head off to Afghanistan next year. I could not be prouder of him. Watching him get his "butter bars" pinned on him on the USS Constitution some years ago by Gen. Sheehan was one of the proudest moments of my life. While I am grateful for ALL our servicemen and women, the times I have been out to San Diego I have never met a finer, more squared away group of people than US Marines. Damn am I glad you guys are on our side. May the Eagle, Globe, and Anchor be celebrating this day 500 years from now!

Ha! My 9 year old went to the MC Ball with a date this past Friday!
A girl from his class invited him (her dad is a CO, whatever that means... Commanding Offices?), so we had to rent a tux and everything.

^^^2nd lieutenants...means he probably was enlisted...but he switched over to the dark side (kidding) and became an officer.....

I thought that the term applied to all 2nd Lieutenants; isn't the term for prior-enlisted officers "Mustangs"? I dunno, I think there may be others, but we always just called them "prior enlisted". Not much creativity there, I know....

Yeah butter bar just means 2nd lieutenant. I wasn't saying that butter bar had anything to do with being prior enlisted. I was just saying that that's probably what he meant when he said he's coming back with butter bars....that he was enlisted..but he got accepted to be an officer...
