It's all about the person behind the camera. I've seen amazing shots with a cheap point and shoot and crappy pics with the latest and greatest DSLR.

+1 on checking www.dpreview.com. Great resource. Also, make sure you give adequate attention to your lens choice. You need good glass, not just a good camera body.

Just to take pics of your car? Get a cheap camera unless you're like a pro photographer (which you don't seem to be).

Most likely scenario: You will get a high end camera, not know how to use it, take some mediocre pics for the first week, and stop using it.

Sorry, just my opinion.

I've had a D700 for a couple years and just bought my brother a D5000. Both are excellent cameras. Unless there are specific features that you are looking for, it may not make sense to pay up for the D5000 over the D3000. Also, looks like they just came up with a new D3100, which closes the gap. It is true that until you really learn to use the camera, you would likely not notice much of a difference across the range. The last thing I will say is that is important to go somewhere and compare how they feel in your hand. Check out this link:

Get either a Canon or Nikon digital SLR. Go cheap and you will have a great camera for taking pictures of whatever you want. Unless you get deep into it, the more expensive cameras will probably give you features you don't want or need. You can always buy a more expensive camera down the road if it becomes a big interest of yours.

Paul

btw, the sig photo below was shot with my phone... and this one

with about $5K of gear. Go to Costco and buy whatever kit dslr they have.

It does happen, though.

Find a decent, used body and get a decent lens. That should last you a while so you can learn how to better use it. At the same time, you didn't spend money unnecessarily. If you get more into it or just as time goes by, you can replace the body. meanwhile, you already have a decent lens.

like what Jeff said lens are key...go with a 50mm f/1.4 or an ultra wide Tokina 11-16mm f/2.8 but they cost as much as the camera body itself.

Ditto. the camera won't make the pic great. The user will.
