No speed limit
The whole idea of speed limits needs to be reworked. Isn't the root of the speed limit a concern for safety? Are speed limits fair?
Where speed "limits" are treated as if they were speed "minimums" they already are ineffective in their ability to regulate speed. Try just going at or under the limit. All the other drivers will be pissed. So, any stop for speeding is a judgement call from law enforcement. It would make better sense to endorse drivers and their vehicles according to their ability to drive without endangering others or themselves. If my car has a top speed of 155 mph and I'm driving on a long and deserted stretch of highway, while my driving ability, and other conditions would make it essentially safe to go over 100 mph, then why shouldn't I? Because aerial surveillance will send a patrol car after me? We all should know that to be the real reason. It is not really a safety issue. You should have some electronic signal you can turn on when you are going to want to drive at speeds that might generate a wreckless driving stop. Law enforcement could intercept that signal and see that your individual endorsements show you to have the training, testing, properly equiped car in good repair, compared with your driving record, road conditions, traffic, weather, etc. People will seek out better driver training. They will avoid being wreckless. Drivers would not always be fined for infractions, but probably be required to take a class, or a test. They might need to just slow down in the junk car they drive. I would bet that cops and drivers would have more sensibility in dealing with one another. And as a motorist, you would have a better chance if you were unreasonably cited to be able to have a judge reconsider the claim. It should be a crime if a police department sets a quota for their traffic cops. It should not be profitable for police departments to issue citations. This came to mind because of this ridiculous story. Done with rant. |

Unfortunately people are too stupid for this to work.
If I was that guy with the ticket I'd tell them to eat a dick and die. Yeah fucking right I'm paying $1M for a speeding ticket. |

+1 i can see your point but think about the few people who are actuly great drivers compared to the rest of the world who buy a car and have no idea how to work the AC... yea it spolis the fun for us but it is also to save us from the idiots in the world, i lost a friend in a car accident he was doing 120 on a highway but some lady in a mini van decided for no reason she didnt like the lane she was in and changed lanes into my friends lane. He managed to miss her car but he hit a tree and burned to death.

no, that wouldn't work at all, you'd have brand new drivers going as fast as they can,
you'd have bad drivers going as fast as they can, etc.

I'm with you, but this will never work in the US. Drivers in the US are just too stupid.

I agree 100% and love this too happen, but think about how much money each state would lose if the State Police didn't issue tickets. I don't know exactly how it works, but I would have to guess that they make quite a profit from the tickets right?

BUT, I do agree, there should be a seperate highway or something to "blast" away on. Id pay premium money to do this even, MINIMUM of 100mph (conditions based of course) and only certified cars. Read my little dealy at the left....I hate speed limits. |

it works in Germany, it also works in Lebanon.. we have no enforceable speed limit at all, anywhere...
we have as much (if not less) accidents as any other country does... it forces you to be awake while driving.. and even though there is no speed limit, people still drive at a pace of 100-120km/h on a highway... so I don't see what the big deal is... it is just more comfortable in the sense that you aren't always worried that you will go over the speed limit and get pulled over.. you are more worried about your actual driving..

Definitely a good point, my eyes end up spending more time than they should on the speedometer due to moneygrubbing pigs. Come on, the dude freakin died. If morons on the road would respect the rule that if there is a car approaching in the left lane that is going faster than you, no matter if he is breaking the limit, then get the fuck out of the way...then he wouldn't have died. |

in Montreal, the speed limit on the highway is around 70km/h or 45mph... and I heard they want to reduce it!!

Major highways and interstates should have one lane dedicated to faster paced traffic (i.e. <85 MPH). States should also tighten up on the piece of shit cars that are allowed on our roads as well as the piece of shit drivers that are granted licenses like its a right.

lol so where exactly does the "let me go whatever speed I want cause I'm a top driver" argument,
account for the person who's going to run a red light and hit you side on as you drive through an intersection? |

It's a good concept but it would be too hard to monitor and enforce. And no matter what your driving skill is, it doesn't mitigate the inherent likelihood of crashes caused by other drivers. Not to mention that with an increase it speed it inherently increases your odds of a colision irregardless of skill.
That being said... my 4 hour drive to the project site I'm at could easily be a 2 Hour drive if I could book it at 120MPH... which I think wouldn't be too crazy given what I've done on the autobahn in Germany. |
