Door dings - what do you do to prevent them?
I have no idea how to prevent them.
Today I parked my car for about an hour next to another owner of the same car. They had some modifications on it, so I figured they'd understand why I parked next to them and would treat my car with the same respect that I would treat theirs. I come back; to the right of my car is a large 4Runner SUV parked in an extremely douchey manner. I looked at the side of my car - lo and behold, there's a small freaking scratch in the exact same color as their car on my door It looks like it only got the clear coat, so it isn't too bad. I always park way out of the way for these reasons. I park just one time in a regular ol' spot, and some guy dings my door. Is it seriously that hard for people to carefully open up their car door, or at least put a hand between their own door so that they do not hit yours? It's just respectful. Anyway, supercoolstorybro. How do you prevent door dings? I try as I might to prevent them, but I always find one every month or two, even when I park far away and in a corner. Being in college apartments is not helping my situation, either. |

the only way to prevent them is to park far away, and get them fixed when they do happen. those strips people have...not every door lines up with it and some, especially rear doors, will still ding up the car.

One other thing, even if you have the same car and/or mods as someone. If they are purposefully parked away from people, this doesn't give you the "park right next to me" ticket. Always Park at least 1 spot away if they are out a bit in the lot. I usually park far out, and even if it is a nice car, if they are in the spot directly adjacent mine I get a bit annoyed. After all, if their car is equally nice or more than mine own, I would guess they would (like me) want that extra space of clearance in the first place as well.

I have a funny story I can relate to. I parked my car at the front in the empty part of the parking lot with no cars at least 3 spaces away from mine on either side. But when I walked up the stairs I saw an M6 under the shade so I was like eh ill park there next to it instead of being alone in the sun. Fast forward 3 hr, as I was leaving, the owner showed up, it was some douche like 16-17 year old korean kid with 3 of his friends, and guess one, he hit my door when opening his door, and I gave him the I will kill you in 5 second face, and he gunned it out of there.

He told me a story about when he owned an E36 M3 way back in the day. He parked it outside of a shopping mall in a far away spot. When he walked out, he saw a line of 4-5 BMWs parked next to his car He said it wasn't uncommon for that to happen. |

I avoid parking next to coupes since the doors are much longer, and tend to be heavier too. I try to find an end spot, and look for well taken care of sedans, or ideally, Jeep Wranglers with no doors. I do tend to avoid Cadillacs and Mercedes though, as both tend to be driven by rather old, entitled house wives who don't seem to care about other people's cars.

Some people are really stupid and let their car door swing open when they get out. Someone put a dent in the 745i the other day. ripped the paint off.

Park as far a way as possible. People too lazy to open a door properly are too lazy to walk. Fact.

Do the strips installed on the z doors work? Or I guess they would only work when you open your door, rather than when someone opens their door INTO the Z. Right? Just trying to get back to something constructive here since my car is still fairly new and i'm looking for ways to keep it appearing that way.

if you are parking next to a car with door strips, pull out and find a different spot. They indicate the owner is an idiot and has a history of opening their door into stationary objects.

Park far away from other cars. Park in the last corner spot. To be honest, when I come back to my E90, there will be either a large soccer mom SUV, or another car that the owner takes pride in. Usually another BMW.

But otherwise, yeah, just never park next to other cars, park where it's unlikely anyone will park next to you. If you can't avoid this, just realize it's likely you'll get dinged.
