It was raced in 2000 with a race-spec S50B32 inline-6 from the E36 M3 race cars. PTG started racing the V8 GTRs midway through the 2001 season at Sears Point. Here's a pic of the real Team PTG M3 GTRs, which were identical to Team Schnizter's cars (the white and blue cars with the "BMW Motorsport" banner), but had slightly different front areo design. The GTR came out before the CSL..., it has a 4.0L V8-engine instead of a 6 cyl. in line M3 engine. The GTR is special made for endurance GT-races (American Le Mans Series = ALMS). It wasn't any longer allowed on track by protests from Porsche. To compete in the raceseries BMW should sell some cars as a productionmodel. So that's why we did have the GTR, with €250.000,- base price it is the most expensive BMW till today.
