i read somewhere (i think on getrichslowly blog) that when you pay for gas with debit card, they put a "pre-authorization charge" on your card, which may be MUCH higher than the actual amount you would pay for a full tank of gas. that creates insufficient funds problem for many people.
but yes, they will charge you more for debit AND credit card transaction. local Valero (CA) stations charge up for $1 more PER GALLON!

I hated that Valero BS when I lived in Cali. I've never heard of $1 gallon, but I have seen a dollar+ on the whole transaction.
Now I get to deal with the BP station that is closest to my home (by far) not accepting my debit card at the pump. So I constantly have to go in to pay and get stuck behind some idiot trying to pay for gas with pennies. *bleh* |

Look - I've been tight on cash before, and I will likely be again, but how often does someone put gas in an M3 and worry about the difference between the temporary fund hold of $100 and the actual charge to eventually come through of $45? Seriously.

In a more serious reply to OP, I think most pumps just run the $1 as a temporary authorization amount, but that goes away when the actual amount hits. That's the way it is with credit, anyway.
