If you can visually tell the difference in quality between the two when they are next to each other, go for the better quality. If they look identical, and without a microscope you can't tell the difference, go bigger...

i work at radioshack so i know a bit about hdtv's/lcd's.
i would recommend the LCD because of the pic quality...the size diff from your other choice isn't really a factor...unless to you it is lol. PLUS there are a bunch of LCD enabled options / features that can get you the best picture quality. Exs: Cables (monstor) lcd ready antennas, swithces, ports, coax adapators...yeaaa list goes on. well good luck on your choice man =]

Well,
I really want to thank everybody for their comments. I have made a decision..... 50" Plasma Samsung HP-S5053 This thing has change my tv viewing experience times 10!. The reason why I went with the plasma instead of the LCD: 1. Plasma has a better picture then LCD. 2. I watch a lot of sports and with LCDs there is a trailing effect sometimes. 3. Price about $600.00 cheaper 4. Size 50" for some reason look much bigger then a 46" call me crazy. 5. nothing is broadcast in 1080p yet so I'm not missing anything. And the 720p Hi-Def is very very good. Cons: 1. Burn in panic....this is really a non-issue I have done lots of research on this 2. DVDs are not the greatest picture quality but that's with and tv lcd or plasma, I hear they have HD-DVDs, (no not blue-ray which is in true 1080p) I think i can still watch blue-ray with 720p plasma...? Thanks again.... |

should have gone 1080P. HDDVD and or Blu Ray are right around the corner. One of them will set a new standard.

I think the bigger issue is between Plasma vs LCD, then the 1080p vs 720p. I agree that if you watch action movies or sports then Plasma is better because of the LCD traing effect and black levels.
Plasma burn-in is overblown these days. Was a problem. Not a problem now.

Panasonic is the way to go my friend - they have the best selling and best quality plasmas out there. Second to Pioneer in my opinion.

Plus a good LCD or DLP set can outlast a Plasma big time w/ just changing the bulb every few years. The Plasma picture will lose its luster over time & then you are done...

use this site as base for looking at flat panel.
http://www.avsforum.com/ I personally prefer LCD now a day. Just make sure you get 8ms respond time from gray to gray or lower to avoid the ghosting. |

this is a no-contest. LCD 100x better. Especially if u are gonna double it as a monitor.

I recently went throught the same decision and went with an LCD. The prices on plasma screens is very attractive, but there will always be the problem with reflection off of the glass screen on a plasma.
My TV is in a room with a complete wall of windows, so a plasma was completely out of the question. Furthermore, I got the added benefit of 1080P resolution from the LCD (though to be honest, its hard to visually recognize the benefit until you get to screen sizes of 50" or larger).

since flat screen tv prices have dropped, I am back in the hunting process. I heard that lcd does not produce nice grey pictures. Take a dark sceen and when a person wlak into a dark room, with lcd you cannot tell where the person head is because it is all blended into the black background. But if you have a good plasma (pioneer or panasonic), you can see the shape and shade and contrast between the head and the dark backgound. hard to explain but I actually witness this black/white contrast in the store. The bottom line is, you get what you paid. A lower end flatscreen (cost less) will not have as good contrast ratio as a higer price brand. Now granded this was 3 years ago so now it might be a whole different story with some of the advanced each manufacturer have come up with. Still a hard decision for me.
