any strobists in here?

Just curious - I'm getting into off-camera flash photography, and I'd love to know who else in here does.

for those of you who do, what equipment do you use? how long have you been at it? If you have any of your work displayed online anywhere, I'd love to see

Yes, but definitely haven't done nearly enough to show anything worthwhile. I use a 580ex and 430ex with alienbees triggers. I'd read hours of strobist.com and walk away overwhelmed and discouraged.

Yeah, use 2x 580ex, 1x430ex and I have a couple monolights that I rarely use b/c they arent very portable. I occasionally do professional work.

Also use Pocketwizard2's. I hate them. I should have gone with Radiopoppers or something else - the PW's are NOT reliable b/c of PC sync issues - cannon does not have screw lock pc cords that I know of... they come loose ALL the time.

I hear ya.....I've been reading up on that site as well, and right now I'm just trying to take in as much technical info as I can, and then once I have the equipment I need, I plan to practice as much as possible.

good to know....I was considering the PW's for a while, then I found out the Alienbees Cybersync triggers are like 1/3 the price of PW's, and I've read good reviews on them.

Can you use the cybersync's with PC cords? or are they shoe-only? I would hate to loose my shoe flash... I dont always use it, but I never work without a flash in the hotshoe.

I strobe here and there. Mainly for wedding and engagement stuff. Got 2 580EX II's, and just got an Alienbees B800. I trigger my speedlights with either my RF-602s (cheap hotshoe mount RF triggers). Or my radiopoppers. And the alienbees I use my RP's to trigger. Have a couple of umbrellas, got 24" softbox for my speedlight coming in, and will probably get a octabox for my alienbee.

I believe you can use them with pc cords. I just found this great write-up/review of the Cybersyncs in the flickr Strobist group - you can read it here.

Thanks. If you are staying with speedlites, i would definitely recommend RF-602s that I use. They are cheap, and they fire consistent. I'm very happy with how they perform.

580exII(x1), SB900(x1), and SB800(x1) all triggered with Pocketwizards. For my stands, I am using Impact with 36'' umbrellas. I'm planning on investing in some Alienbees800 next.

580EX (2) and a 580EX II (which I'd gladly give up for the older 580EX) I have like 6 Metz 45 but I have not used them for quite sometime)

I have to use off camera flash photography very frequently for work as there is not time nor space to set up a Dynalite system.

All I have to say is Keep It Stupid Simple and learn how to blend light.

I've got 2 AB800s with 36"octaboxes and some umbrellas, a 580ex and a couple of pocket wizards. I've found that shooting people i'm short one light or at least a trigger for the 580ex. I can usually get by, but an additional trigger or light would be great.

I rushed in strobes to shoot cars, but forgot that i needed a portable power source. Which i still haven't gotten. Anyhow, here are a few of my indoor people shots....

One light on the background with a 20degree spot, one octabox just in front of the camera bout 4' higher than the camera. Should have used the 580 to bounce off of the ceiling for a little more light. Or just turned up the front light.

Octabox about 3 feet in front of her face and a 20 degree spot on her back.

Same lighting set up as above, just moved camear position.

Don't remember the set up for this one but i think both lights are on her, prolly octobox to the rigth and spot on her hair.

Octabox front left, spot on the background

I love off-camera strobes...just don't have a ton of time to actually do it. Here's my latest:

Strobist:
- Vivitar 285HV on left with soft box
- Vivitar 285HV on right with umbrella bounce

Nice! Everything exposed soft and nice like.

i did this one with a LED flashlight. 6sec exposure while splashing some light with the flash light. I thought it came out decent considering the light source.

Good work! Nice soft light throughout.

I did this one with an LED flashlight. 6sec exposure while splashing some light around the cabin. I thought it came out pretty good considering the light source.
