You have not been around BMWs for too long have ya? Little word of advice, if you are not 100% sure, then don't share it on the net. Lord knows the net is full of enough false BS already. Yes, the e36 M3 was offered with an automatic. Yes, the e36 M3 was offered in 4 doors (I owned one) Yes, the e36 M3 was offered in a convertible And yes, the e36 M3 4 door with a 5 speed manual was one amazing car. The chassis was more rigid than the coupe variant. 4 doors for practicality Monday though Friday. M3 performance for fun on the track Saturday and Sunday. I miss mine!!!!! |

Important fact in this thread, the US E36 M3 had a bored out version of the 2.8l M52, not the actual M motor, the S52b32, which had six individual throttle bodies and made 286hp. The US car came with an optional automatic, the rest of the world got the better engine, no slushboxes, and an optional SMG automated manual.

I Had a Friend with an E36 4 Door M3 Automatic
It was a '97 model year I believe. My friend had limited use of his legs and so had hand controls fitted.
The story I've heard about the US E36 M3: The US E36 M3 was due to some members of BMWCCA convincing BMW that there was a market in the US for the car (with a slightly hot rodded normal engine). Initially BMW had no plans to bring the M3 into the US as it was felt that there wouldn't be sufficient market for the $50K or so they would have to charge for the car with the largely handbuilt 300+ HP engine.

All of the E36 M3 variants had an auto option at one point (coupe, convertible, sedan).

Good point, the S52b32 did have 321hp, it was the 3.0 liter that had 286. Either way, it should explain why Europeans mostly preferred the E36 to the heavier, barely more powerful E46, while the US went crazy for the E46 with a real M motor.

i cant think of anything worse than an e36 auto m3. the e36 m3 is bad enough as it, but then add an auto... big time fail. i still say that the e36 m3 was the worst bmw designed 3 ever and the s50 engine is a joke for a //m engine. the s52 was okay, but no itb's, no high revs, and still not built to the tight tolerances that ///m engines are supposed to be to. the euro s50 would have fixed a lot of problems. but even just looks wise, they might as well have went from the e30 to e46.

My friend had (has?) an Estoril Blue M3 Sedan, five speed manual, grey interior... awesome car. The sedans back then were way cooler than those now.

+1. This thread is a reminder to believe no more than 50 percent of what you see, 30 percent of what you read (especially on the Internet), and 20 percent of what you hear…
