Close call on my way to work today…. TWICE

I have about 3000 miles on my '06 330i so far, and already it has adverted two certain destructions within 20 minutes of each other, all happened today.

First, I was pulling out of my community, trying to turn left. Normally, I would get to the center divider, and wait for the traffic to clear before merging in, all the while checking for the incoming traffic on my left side as I move across the street. So, that's what I did this morning. Without any traffic coming on my left, I pressed down my gas paddle and move my car forward. Just when I tune to the traffic in front of me, in a split second, I see a Honda Accord speeding from the right pulling into the street I was coming out of, and into my path. I swear I didn't see that coming; the driver didn't slow down, or signal, as he/she is intending to turn in my street. I slammed on the break and stopped just short of ramming into the other car's driver side. (These Bimmer sure can stop on a dime.)

Then when I was speeding down the 57 freeway in excess of a very fast speed 40 mph during the morning traffic hour (that's fast for morning traffic here...), tailgating this tall truck on the third lane. I see there's no car on the 4th lane, so I made a pass to the 4th lane. I didn't have enough time to react to anything that may pop up on either side. Long and behold, as I was moving to the empty 4th lane, a line of cars were stopped right in my path. I jerked my steering wheel and switch back to the 3rd lane. Had I not done it in time, I would have rear ended a Mercedes S500 the same way my previous car was read ended and totaled. (These Bimmers sure handles as advertised.)

So yeah, I am glad I bought a E90 (instead of the IS350 I looked at). It handles great and can stop on dime, and every girls I know thinks it's chick's magnet - eventhough they all still refuse to date me…..

tailgating is never a good idea. tailgating a tuck during RUSH HOUR is just plain stupid, you can't see anything in front of you.

What kind of job can a person have who has grammer like that and still makes enough money to afford a 330??

Which is why it seems so many of us get rear-ended I always make sure I'm giving the guy behind me enough distance and warning to stop cos I'm afraid of them being too close and not having my awesome stopping power.

This is dangerous and lots of ppl fall into this trap. Never switch to the lane next to a truck that you have no visibility in. 2 little "tricks" I do when I want to pull this off are:

1. Slightly move my car over to the lane to peak and get an idea of traffic... also observe other cars passing into that lane to see how fast they're going or whether they're braking.

2. Try to look underneath the truck to see if there are other cars to the side of it... if it's clear then I'm good to go. This doesn't work if you're behind the truck though; it works when you're say to the left of the truck, and want to get to the right of the truck... double lane switch, not recommended

Had a similar experience this AM on the way to work. Car in front of me on the highway stopped hard, while I was checking out the passing lane to my left with a quick head turn. Luckily lane was clear, and swerved HARD into the open passing lane.

Most other cars - would have clipped the left rear corner of that car in front of me, doing 75 mph. Damn, I love my car.

you're confused by that sentence?
pulling out = getting out of, i.e. driving out of, i.e. leaving

community = where he lives, i.e. where his house/home is located

I've heard people pull out of driveways, but never out of a community. Not a common usage for sure. Maybe it is a regional expression.

i was on the left turn lane...2 rolls of cars on the right side are stopped by the red light....my left turn lane turns green while i'm rolling up...so i'm driving along...out of no wear a chick sprints in front of me...(trying to catch a MUNI, public transit, that is about to leave)....i brake immediately...she doesn't keep running or jump out of the way...she STOPS in shock...omg...that split second seemed like an hour in slow motion...but i gotta say...the bmw's braking is awesome...i didn't hit her..i was inches away from her...

After the thrashing you all gave him, he might be pulling out of this community...

Good thing we can all take criticism in good humor here on E90post.

same thing happened to me when i got my car and was driving home. I think honestly its because subconsciencely we know we're in "nice" cars and thus we're acting overly defensive. Give it time and suddenly you'll not notice the lady in the lane beside you putting on make up and talking on the phone, who's tahoe is a meer inch away from your fender

haha, same here, I've never heard or use of the word 'community' in that context, but with common sense, we knew what he was getting at
