I should have entered this since we actually have snow and ice here now, but oh well.

Yeah I gotta say that some of those images, while great, do not fit in with the theme because the main subject is not a phase of water in the winter (it merely has it as an element, not the main subject). I meant no malice by that- just speaking my mind.

Interesting. Rodi is pulling away.
I always love Rodi's work, but I would have sworn that signes was going to bury us this time. The water background is incredibly ambiguous, mixed with the snow on the trees, I think that adds power to the image. Oh well, one more reason I'm not an art critic. Dave

Dave, appreciate the support. I liked the subtlety of the snow cradled in the trees and though that with the water would fit the contest well.

It's also amazing how many people come in here and only vote for 1 photo when clearly there are more than just 1 "good" photo posted (not to take anything away from Rodi who is in the lead... it's just funny how many solo votes people receive). I think people who vote are too scared to vote for someone else who might win. The format is designed to be like this:
3 photos: A, B, C we have someone vote for A and C but not B we have someone vote for B and C but not A we have someone vote for A B and C Even though A and B are very good, C is the most commonly voted for thus it should win. It's kinda like Heisman voting, sometimes (though I believe its been a long time) the guy with the overwhelming # of 2nd place votes can win if the 1st place votes are spread out between a few other nominees. I dunno, I always think there are at least 2-3 photos in every contest that could potentially be winners but I don't see how people can just look at all of them and ONLY like 1 |

As a frequent single voter myself, I dont think its a matter of liking only 1...its just choosing the one I like the best, even if I like a bunch of them perhaps ive been in the financial world too long lol

Yeah for me I usually vote for multiple photos (photos that I think are best). In this case, however, IMO there is only one that fits perfectly with the theme as well as being a great photo.

I'm not saying I think Rodi shouldn't have won (I voted for him and if I only had 1 vote I still would have voted for him)... its just these semi landslide victories are starting to bother me when I think there should be 2 or 3 photos that all could make it close (and I know it was closer earlier this week). Just irks me is all. I'd rather see an 8-8-9-7-8-6 than a 2-1-26-4-8-0 vote count ya know? |

i'm a one-vote kinda guy. i don't like looking at a bunch of photos and say, "oh this one's cool, oooh this one too, oh that one's cool too - i'll vote for all three." it'll help you with analyzing pieces as well - you can narrow it down and critique and scrutinize, make a critical decision on which one is best. this is what one-vote forces you to do. being able to choose a bunch or unlimited number is pointless - you just start voting/picking on "coolness." they're all "cool."

But anyway, congrats on the win, it looks like you've pretty much pulled away. I truly did love your photo this week so kudos on excellent pic and imminent victory. |

well, thank you. i truly appreciate it. don't want to drag on with a debate, but one more point:
it's one photo - one frame. not a season of all plays, good and bad (re: heisman). that is, if i'm looking at a photo involving fashion, and the photog has a piece of the model's shoe out of frame, it completely ruins the entire photograph - all other good points on the photo lost. car photography, if half of a speed limit sign is out of frame (or something else relevant) - same thing. now, these are pretty specific "negative things" to influence one's feeling about an image, but it's just the principle of it. anyway... cheers to all. really dig a lot of the images - especially oneintheory's, dave's and signes'. good stuff. hopefully the votes keep coming in. . .

I taken both approaches over the various contests, voting just one or multiple. Not sure what is right but I generally respond to more than one photograph in a contest. I think what might be happening here is that the theme was a little vague, or at least open to more interpretation than others. If you approach the theme from a different perspective, you could have very different reactions to the submissions. I just hope for all contests that the casual voters are thoughtful about their votes.
