Would you have helped him if he wasn't in a BMW? What if he was driving an old civic?

I ask the questions you're afraid to ask.

Unfortunately, I've seen first hand what damage drunk driving can do and I have no sympathy with that driver and I believe that your actions - while well intended - were equally wrong. Your sympathy leads me to believe that you've been guilty of the same behavior. Sorry - you're not getting any "atta boy" comments from me. |

I never drink and drive (I never drink any alcohol, period), but a few friends of mine were killed by a drunk driver so that's basically the reason why I have a zero tolerance for such behaviour. Personally, I'd have called the cops myself in order to teach the idiot a lesson, and hopefully change his ways. Still, thanks to Alpine3 nobody got hurt, so I think he still deserves some credit for his actions. Marlon |

After dealing with countless incidents of this, one thing is inevitable. Getting that fool off the road was the most important part of the incident. Arrest may have a positive effect sometime in the future, but getting drunks off the road is the key here. cb1111's comment about Alpine3 sympathizing with the driver due to guilt by association is unjust. There are actually people out there that act out of compassion, and we don't know what his motivation was.
Alpine3 did what he thought was right, and who knows what could have happened if he had just called the cops and left? It's true that the driver may do it again in the future, but at least he didn't drive throught someone's living room last night. Nice Job Alpine |

Glad you were able to do it, but if he passed out behind the wheel he'd obviously had more than a few pops, which puts it in "more than a mistake" territory with me. -1 on the driver.
Hopefully when he realizes that some total stranger got in his car and drove it away he'll realize that he made a GIANT mistake, but who knows. |

Wow. I'm way too skeptical, keep to myself, to ever:
Sorry but I call BS. You either knew the guy, or elaborated a smudge. I would possibly believe it if you simply waked his ass up, and told him to get off the road. I would never get into some strangers car while they were passed out in it, and then drive off. Too many uncertainties that could screw him, and you both. I'd sooner expect to get baited by a set up like that. Either by the cops, or some hooligans.

Because he got off. If he was dumb enough to drive drunk in the first place, he'll do it again. He got lucky, but has had no real consequences for his actions.
We've all been stupid, probably a good majority of us have driven drunk at least once in our lives. Some people do it for years without getting caught, but it will catch up to you. I got lucky one time, and was let off the hook without a DUI (cops drove me home) 3 months later I was back doing the same shit. ...And guess what, I got busted. Spending that night in jail changed my life, and I'll never do it again. Props for being a nice guy, unfortunately usually it's just not enough.
